Sleep Doctor’s Take: WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress

The WinkBeds GravityLux has an innovative design that helps it to avoid the common pitfalls of memory foam mattresses, like overheating and restricting movement. Thanks to the three available firmness levels, nearly all of our testers found a model of the WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress that offered the right mix of cushion and support.

WinkBeds GravityLux Mattress: An Introduction

The GravityLux is a high-end memory foam mattress from WinkBeds, a direct-to-consumer mattress brand best known for its innovative hybrid designs. The GravityLux is available in three firmness levels — medium soft (4), medium (5), and firm (7) — to accommodate a wide range of body types and sleep preferences.

With a unique construction featuring gel-infused polyfoam above a memory foam comfort layer, the GravityLux aims to add breathability and bounce to a traditional all-foam design.

To help decide if the GravityLux is right for you, we’ll discuss how it fared in key performance categories with our testers, who span a range of weights and sleeping positions. We’ll also detail its specifications and availability, the brand’s sleep trial and warranty, and answer some frequently asked questions.

How we review

We test products extensively using hands-on, data-driven methodology. Since there is no one-size-fits-all mattress, we use testers with different sleeping preferences and body types and analyze performance in key categories to help you choose the perfect mattress for your needs.

What’s It Like to Sleep On the GravityLux Mattress?

The first thing our testing team noticed about the GravityLux is that it’s not an average memory foam mattress. The breathable Tencel cover with gel-infused polyfoam is cool against the skin. That same polyfoam top layer adds a slight bounce that most memory foam beds lack. The comfort layer still contours to the body, but it’s more subtle, without the sinking feeling of some all-foam mattresses.

The dense layers of foam in the comfort system isolate motion so well that even those who sleep with a pet or a restless partner are likely to sleep undisturbed. With three firmness levels to choose from, almost anyone in the market for a foam mattress can find a model that suits them.

As with most mattresses, the GravityLux has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. Sleepers should consider these in relation to their personal preferences and needs.

Pros

  • Excellent motion isolation makes it a great pick for couples
  • Multiple firmness options meet the needs of a wide range of sleepers
  • Includes a 120-night sleep trial and limited lifetime warranty

Cons

  • Edge support is lacking, especially in the Soft and Medium versions
  • Stomach sleepers over 230 pounds may need more support
  • Not as budget-friendly as some memory foam mattresses

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

Our team is composed of testers with different body weights and sleeping positions because these characteristics help determine the best mattress for each individual. The GravityLux is available in three different firmness options that the brand refers to as Soft, Medium, and Firm. On our 10-point firmness scale, they rate as medium soft (4), medium (5), and firm (7), respectively.

Side Sleepers

In general, the GravityLux proved comfortable for side sleepers. The memory foam comfort layer provides pressure relief, while the zoned polyfoam transition layer offers targeted support, with more firmness at the hips to promote spinal alignment.

Our testers under 130 pounds found both the Medium and Soft models offered a good balance of support and cushion. Testers over 230 pounds found that the Firm version provided excellent support without the sinkage that sometimes occurs with contouring memory foam.

Back Sleepers

Our testers found that the Medium and Firm models of the GravityLux both provide contouring to relieve pressure and ample support in the lumbar region to prevent lower back pain.

Specifically, testers under 130 pounds found the Medium model most comfortable, while those over 130 pounds preferred the extra support of the Firm mattress. While some back sleepers under 130 pounds enjoyed the plush feel of the Soft model, those who weighed more found it offered insufficient support.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers tend to prefer mattresses that offer moderate cushion with significant pushback at the midsection. Most of our testers generally found the Firm model best for their needs. However, our testers under 130 pounds found that the Medium model provided the perfect balance of pressure relief and support.

Those weighing between 130 and 230 pounds preferred the Firm model for extra support. Testers found that the memory foam gave a nice balance of cradling and responsiveness, while the zoned polyfoam transition layer delivered the support they needed in the midsection.

Our Performance Ratings

Our testers assessed the performance of the GravityLux across a range of categories and assigned ratings on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 3/5 (Firm), 4/5 (Soft, Medium)

The GravityLux offers cushioning at key pressure points that aid spinal alignment and could help alleviate hip pain. The Soft and Medium models offered more pressure relief overall.

That said, pressure relief varies according to sleeping position and weight. Our testers over 130 pounds were best served by the Medium or Firm models. Testers under 130 pounds reported excellent pressure relief from the Soft version.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 4/5 (Firm), 3/5 (Soft, Medium)

Mattresses that contain memory foam often sleep hotter than the alternatives because the material can trap heat. Aiming to counter this tendency, the GravityLux has a breathable Tencel cover with 2 inches of cooling gel-infused polyfoam quilted inside, plus two layers of breathable foam beneath. Because it contours less closely, the Firm model performed the best in this area.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 4/5 (Firm), 5/5 (Soft, Medium)

Foam mattresses generally offer solid motion support, and the GravityLux surpasses many available models in this category thanks to its multi-layer foam comfort system. The Soft and Medium versions of the mattress absorb virtually all movement, meaning that your sleep won’t be disturbed by restless partners or pets. The Firm version may transfer some motion that could disturb the most sensitive sleepers.

Edge Support

Rating: 3/5 (Firm) 2/5 (Soft, Medium)

Like many all-foam mattresses, the GravityLux tends to sag along the perimeter, particularly the Soft and Medium models. Those who tend to sleep on the side of the bed or who have trouble getting in and out of bed may want to consider the Firm version, which offers better edge support.

Durability

Rating: 3/5

Since the GravityLux is constructed from high-quality foam, we expect it to last somewhat longer than the average foam mattress. Foam tends to break down faster than latex or metal springs, and sleepers can usually expect a foam mattress to last 6 to 7 years. We expect the GravityLux to hold up well, though durability varies based on individual sleepers and their habits.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 4/5 (Firm), 3/5 (Soft, Medium)

Memory foam often restricts motion, but the polyfoam quilted into the cover makes the surface of the GravityLux Mattress a bit more responsive, especially on the Firm version. Ease of movement is especially important for combination sleepers and those who toss and turn at night.

Sex

Rating: 3/5 (Medium, Firm), 2/5 (Soft)

The polyfoam in the cover of the GravityLux provides a slight bounce and average ease of movement, which may help it perform well during sex. That said, couples may find that the Soft version restricts movement too much for their liking.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 3/5

Like all foam mattresses, the GravityLux may give off a slight odor when it is first unboxed. The smell, known as off-gassing, is caused by volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the manufacturing process.

WinkBeds uses breathable foam that is CertiPUR-US certified to be low-VOC and free of harmful chemicals. We found the GravityLux’s off-gassing to be minimal, and the slight new mattress smell dissipated quickly.

What is the GravityLux Mattress Made Of?

The GravityLux comes in medium soft (4), medium (5), and firm (7) models. All three share a similar construction, with differences in firmness attributed to the density of foam used in each model’s construction.

The cover’s eucalyptus-derived Tencel fabric is intended to maximize breathability and wick away moisture. In an effort to further offset the heat-trapping properties of foam, layers of polyfoam infused with cooling gel are quilted into the cover.

Beneath the cover is a comfort layer of proprietary AirCell memory foam designed to contour to the sleeper’s body and provide pressure relief. The memory foam features air pockets intended to maximize airflow.

A zoned transition layer of proprietary Progression Foam polyfoam provides both support and cushion. With five different targeted zones, this layer aims to promote spinal alignment by offering extra support near the hips and abdomen, while allowing the shoulders and legs to sink more.

The base of the GravityLux consists of the brand’s ATLAS Core high-density foam, designed to resist sagging and indention. All foam in the mattress is CertiPUR-US certified, indicating that it is free of harmful chemicals and heavy metals.

How Much Does the GravityLux Mattress Cost?

The GravityLux runs at a higher price-point than the average all-foam mattress. However, it’s reasonably priced compared to other luxury models on the market, and its quality materials and range of firmness options make it a good value for shoppers seeking a high-end foam mattress.

Which WinkBeds Mattress Is Right for You?

In addition to the GravityLux, WinkBeds offers two hybrid mattresses. Its flagship model, the WinkBed, is available in four different firmness options. It balances the cradling of its foam comfort layers with a responsive coil core. This model is a good choice for sleepers who want more bounce and support from their mattress without sacrificing the contouring of foam. Our testers over 230 pounds across all sleeping positions loved the extra support from the two firmest models.

The WinkBed EcoCloud Mattress combines a 4-inch comfort layer of organic latex with a coil core for a medium (5), highly responsive mattress. Back and side sleepers under 230 pounds who preferred the bouncy feel of latex found that this mattress suited them well.
