Sleep Doctor’s Take: Layla Mattress

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress is dual-sided, so you can choose to sleep on the medium soft or firm side. It combines memory foam with polyfoam to create a conforming surface with dense support at its core. The infusion of copper gel in its memory foam layers is designed to disperse heat and resist bacteria buildup.

Layla Mattress: An Introduction

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress is a flippable all-foam bed that allows you to choose between two firmness levels. Our testing team rated one side as medium soft (4) on our 10-point firmness scale, while the other is firm (7).

The mattress is constructed with four layers of foam encased in a blended fabric cover designed for breathability. Both sides begin with a layer of memory foam infused with copper gel that is intended to pull heat away from a sleeper’s body. The medium soft side has an additional layer of zoned polyfoam for targeted support. At the center of the mattress is a dense polyfoam core that gives the bed structure and additional support.

We’ll cover our testing team’s performance ratings and the basics of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress, including its construction and pricing.

How We Review

Our team uses a rigorous testing methodology to evaluate every mattress we review. We test across various performance categories to provide a thorough assessment and help you choose the best mattress.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Layla Mattress?

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress has a different feel depending on which side faces up. The firm (7) side has a 1-inch layer of memory foam with underlying support from dense polyfoam. With a thicker 3-inch layer of memory foam and a second layer of plush polyfoam, the medium soft (4) side conforms more closely to the body to cushion areas prone to pressure buildup.

The flippable mattress’s construction is well suited for those who want to try out different firmness levels or whose sleep needs fluctuate. We found that the medium soft side of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress excels at pressure relief, particularly for side sleepers under 230 pounds, while the firm side’s less conforming memory foam offers better temperature regulation.

Layla Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Versatile dual-sided design with firm (7) and medium soft (4) sides
  • Foam construction on firm side sleeps cool
  • Both sides isolate motion well

Cons

  • The medium soft side lacks strong edge support
  • The firm side may not provide enough pressure relief for side sleepers
  • Couples may only find success with this mattress if they have similar sleep styles and body weights

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

One side of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress rates medium soft (4) on our 10-point firmness scale, while the other is firm (7). Both sides provide support and contouring, but two layers of compressible foam help the softer side conform more closely to the body.

To choose which sleep surface to use, consider your preferences, sleep position, and body weight. These factors determine the ideal firmness for your body, ensuring a balance between comfort and support. Our testing team includes people of varying body types and sleep styles to provide accurate assessments.

Side sleepers on our team who weigh less than 230 pounds preferred the deeper contouring of the medium soft side, while those over that weight threshold liked the more balanced feel of the firm side. Most of our back and stomach sleepers favored the stronger support of the firm side, though some under 130 pounds were on the fence and found their ideal comfort level is somewhere in the middle.

Side Sleepers

Most side sleepers on our testing team preferred the medium soft side, noting that it cushions the shoulders and hips to help align the spine. Those under 230 pounds were more comfortable on the softer side, while those over 230 pounds preferred the firmer side. If you are a full-time side sleeper, consider other mattresses for side sleepers.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers over 130 pounds rated the firm side of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress as very good to excellent. Generally, a back sleeper needs a firmer bed to keep their hips from sinking too far and misaligning their spine.

Stomach Sleepers

Most stomach sleepers on our team found better support on the firm side, regardless of their body weight. Our stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds were especially impressed, giving it the highest grade available. Stomach sleepers generally need a firm bed to keep the midsection from sinking into the mattress.

Our Performance Ratings

Our testing team used a five-point scale to assess the Layla Memory Foam Mattress. A score of 1 represents a poor rating, while a score of 5 indicates excellent performance.

The Layla excels at pressure relief and motion isolation, but can be difficult to move around.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 4/5 (Soft Side), 2/5 (Firm Side)

Our testing team found that the combined layers of memory foam and plush polyfoam on the medium soft side of the mattress provided impressive pressure relief. On the firm side, the single layer of memory foam provides less pressure relief but more stable support.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 3/5 (Soft Side), 4/5 (Firm Side)

We found that the Layla Memory Foam Mattress sleeps cooler than many comparable all-foam beds. It is encased in a breathable cover, and each memory foam layer has an infusion of copper gel designed for cooling. The medium soft side was less temperature neutral than the firm side during our tests.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 4/5 (Soft Side), 3/5 (Firm Side)

Most memory foam beds isolate motion well, and our testers found that the Layla Memory Foam Mattress lived up to our expectations. The medium soft side isolated motion better due to the thicker memory foam in its comfort system, which contours more deeply and is less responsive than the firm side’s 1-inch layer of memory foam.

Edge Support

Rating: 2/5 (Soft Side), 3/5 (Firm Side)

Foam beds often struggle with edge support because memory foam tends to compress under pressure. Our testing team found that the firm side of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress had average edge support for an all-foam model, while the medium soft side compressed easily. Strong edges help sleepers use the entire mattress and make it easier to sit on the bed’s edge.

Durability

Rating: 3/5

The average lifespan of an all-foam mattress is six to seven years. Our testers predict that the Layla Memory Foam Mattress should meet that estimation, particularly if the mattress is flipped periodically. In general, firmer beds tend to resist wear better than softer models. But how long a mattress lasts depends on its proper care and maintenance as well as the sleeper’s body weight and sleep preferences.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 2/5 (Soft Side), 3/5 (Firm Side)

Our testers found that the memory foam in the Layla Mattress made it somewhat challenging to change positions. Memory foam contours to the body, making a sleeper feel they’re being hugged by the bed. This can make movement more difficult than on a more responsive surface.

Sex

Rating: 2/5 (Soft Side), 3/5 (Firm Side)

Memory foam retains heat, conforms to the body, and doesn’t have much bounce, so memory foam mattresses usually aren’t the most conducive for sex. The firm side of the Layla Memory Foam Mattress has less memory foam in its top layer and stronger edges, making it more responsive and slightly better for sex than the softer side.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 3/5

Off-gassing involves the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) when a compressed foam mattress is unboxed. VOCs give off a chemical-like smell but are generally considered harmless. The company recommends setting up the Layla Memory Foam Mattress in a properly ventilated area and allowing it to off-gas for a few hours before putting on bedding or sleeping on it.

What Is the Layla Mattress Made Of?

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress is made up of four layers encased in a blended fabric cover. Since it’s a flippable mattress, the firmness option you choose determines the order of the layers.

If you choose the firm (7) side, the comfort system includes a 1-inch memory foam layer infused with copper gel. The layer is engineered to aid the mattress in resisting heat buildup. The support core at the center of the mattress contains 4.5 inches of sturdy polyfoam.

On the medium soft (4) side, the comfort system has 3 inches of memory foam infused with copper gel followed by 2 inches of zoned polyfoam that’s designed to target areas of the body where pressure can build up.

All foams used in the Layla Memory Foam Mattress are CertiPUR-US certified, ensuring that the materials are free from a wide range of potentially harmful chemicals.

Which Layla Mattress Is Right for You?

Layla currently offers two mattress models, the flagship Layla Memory Foam Mattress and the Layla Hybrid Mattress. Both are flippable beds with medium soft (4) and firm (7) sides.

The Layla Hybrid is constructed with a combination of polyfoam and memory foam, supported by 6 inches of pocketed coils in its core. Our testing team found that the firm (7) side of the Layla Hybrid performed better than the Layla Memory Foam for sleepers over 230 pounds. We also found the Layla Hybrid to have stronger edge support and ease of movement.

Layla Mattress FAQ

Should hot sleepers choose the Layla Mattress?

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress includes a breathable cover and layers of copper-infused memory foam, both designed for a cooler sleep. While the medium soft side performed about average for an all-foam bed during our sleep lab tests, the firm side slept cooler than comparable models.

What are the pros and cons of a dual-sided mattress?

A dual-sided mattress lets you choose which firmness level is most comfortable and can increase a mattress’ lifespan if it’s flipped periodically. While this makes dual-sided models ideal for guest rooms, they may be suboptimal for couples with vastly different comfort preferences.

Is the Layla Mattress good for combination sleepers?

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress is a good option for combination sleepers. The firm side performs best for back sleepers, stomach sleepers, and side sleepers over 230 pounds, while the medium soft side works well for people under 130 pounds regardless of preferred sleep position.

Can you sleep on the Layla Mattress right away?

The Layla Memory Foam Mattress will take shape within minutes of unboxing. The company recommends allowing the mattress to off-gas for several hours in a well-ventilated area before use.

Is it easy to return a Layla Mattress if you don’t like it?

After the required four-week break-in period, you can initiate a free return on the company’s website. Layla will then arrange to have your mattress retrieved and donated to a local nonprofit.
