Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress: Our Verdict

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night is a hybrid mattress that uses Serta’s patented memory foam and is available at an affordable price-point. It comes in four models, allowing sleepers to choose the level of firmness that best suits their needs.

The Renewed Night features Serta’s uniquely formulated HexCloud gel memory foam, which is designed to hug the body and relieve pressure points while staying cool. This comfort layer is supported by a thick base of reinforced, individually wrapped pocketed coils, offering responsive support all the way up to the outermost edge of the bed.

Available in a range of firmness levels, the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night provides versatile comfort and support for nearly any type of sleeper. Our testing team found that this mattress performed especially well for sleepers weighing over 130 pounds. Combined with free shipping, free returns, and a 10-year limited warranty, the Renewed Night represents an excellent value.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress: An Introduction

Serta has been making mattresses for over 90 years. The company’s Perfect Sleeper line is made up of hybrid mattresses that combine memory foam and pocketed coils to provide impressive pressure relief and edge support in a range of price-points. This collection includes the Renewed Night, Renewed Sleep, and Luminous Sleep Mattresses.

We’ll focus on the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress, which combines HexCloud memory foam and a pocketed coil support core. Shoppers can choose between four levels of firmness, including one model with a pillow-top.

We’ll cover everything you need to know about the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night’s materials, construction, price, and customer service policies. We’ll also discuss how this mattress performed when we put it to the test in our sleep lab.

How We Review

Our goal is to help you choose the right mattress for your needs. We do this by conducting a wide range of hands-on tests in our sleep lab. Our testing methodology covers key performance metrics and includes input from sleepers with a diverse set of body sizes and sleep styles.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress?

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night is a hybrid mattress that strikes a balance between cushioning and support. The combination of pocketed coils and memory foam provides pressure relief without sacrificing durability. Although the mattress’ performance varies by firmness level, our testing showed that most models excel at isolating movement and have solid edge support that makes it easy to get into and out of bed.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Multiple firmness options cater to the needs of many kinds of sleepers
  • Hybrid construction provides standout comfort and support for sleepers under 130 pounds
  • Foam rail around the support core reinforces the mattress’ edges

Cons

  • Contouring memory foam may not be ideal for hot sleepers
  • Firmer options underperformed for side sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds
  • Softer models didn’t provide the support needed for sleepers over 230 pounds

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

We rate mattress firmness on a 10-point scale. The Renewed Night is available in Extra Firm, which we rate as firm (7), Medium, which we rate as medium firm (6), and Plush, which we rate as medium soft (4). The Firm model is also available with a pillow-top, which we rated as a medium firm (6).

Finding the right firmness level for your needs depends on your bodyweight, favorite sleep position, and personal comfort preferences. For example, sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds often prefer a firm mattress because of the added support, while those under 130 typically prefer a softer feel.

Based on our tests and this mattress’ range of models, we found that the Renewed Night Mattress offers good to excellent comfort for many different kinds of sleepers.

Side Sleepers

Our testers who sleep on their side reported very different experiences depending on their body hype and the firmness level of each Renewed Night model. Generally speaking, side sleepers under 130 pounds found that the contouring HexCloud gel memory foam layer did an excellent job of cradling their curves and relieving pressure in key areas like the hips and shoulders. Side sleepers under 230 pounds tended to prefer the softer models, while side sleepers over 230 pounds did better on the firmer models.

Back Sleepers

Several models of the Renewed Night offer an ideal balance of cushioning and support for back sleepers. Our testers who sleep on their back and weigh over 230 pounds were especially impressed with the lumbar support provided by the Extra Firm option. The Firm model with the pillow-top was a standout for our testers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. Our back sleepers under 130 pounds preferred the contouring of the Medium and Plush options.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a mattress that’s supportive enough to prevent the midsection from sinking in too far while still being soft enough to keep painful pressure points from developing around the hips and shoulders. The stomach sleepers on our team who weigh over 130 pounds found that the combination of pocketed coils and dense memory foam in the Extra Firm model offered good support and contouring. Stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds preferred the softer models.

Our Performance Ratings

Our team of experienced product testers evaluated the different versions of the Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress in a variety of performance categories. We score each category on a five-point scale from poor (1) to excellent (5).

Pressure Relief

Rating: Plush: 4/5 | Medium: 3/5 | Firm (Pillow-Top): 3/5 | Extra Firm: 2/5

With its contouring layer of Serta’s HexCloud gel memory foam, the Renewed Night offers a body-hugging feel that doesn’t put pressure on common pain points like the shoulders and hips.

It’s important to note that a bed’s ability to reduce pressure depends on the sleeper’s body weight, sleep position, and the firmness level of the mattress. Our team found that the Plush model offers the most cushioning, while the Extra Firm option provides less pressure relief.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: Plush: 2/5 | Medium: 3/5 | Firm (Pillow-Top): 3/5 | Extra Firm: 3/5

Our testers found that most models of the Renewed Night Mattress offer a decent level of temperature control to help keep sleepers cool. The coil support core and gel-infused comfort layer allow for good airflow, and the phase change material in the cover is designed to be cool to the touch. However, the Plush model did trap more heat than the other options, making it less than ideal for hot sleepers.

Motion Isolation

Rating: Plush: 4/5 | Medium: 4/5 | Firm (Pillow-Top): 3/5 | Extra Firm: 2/5

Motion isolation is important for sleepers who move a lot during the night and don’t want to disturb their bed partner. Memory foam is known for its ability to prevent motion transfer across the surface of a mattress, and the Renewed Night’s memory foam comfort layer helped it perform well in this category. Our testers noted that the Plush and Medium models did a good job of preventing motion transfer, especially compared to the firmer models.

Edge Support

Rating: Plush: 2/5 | Medium: 4/5 | Firm (Pillow-Top): 3/5 | Extra Firm: 4/5

Foam comfort layers can sometimes sink excessively at the edge of the bed, but the Renewed Night’s pocketed coils provide good support throughout the bed, including at its edges. To reinforce the mattress’ perimeter, the coil support core is surrounded by a dense rail of polyfoam. This adds structure to the mattress sides and helps support your body weight when you sit or sleep near the edge of the bed.

Durability

Rating: Plush: 3/5 | Medium: 3/5 | Firm (Pillow-Top): 3/5 | Extra Firm: 3/5

The combination of memory foam and coils in Serta’s Renewed Night Mattress give this bed average durability for a hybrid. Although the foam-wrapped support core makes this bed more resistant to sagging at the edges, memory foam does tend to soften over time. We estimate that, like other hybrids, the Renewed Night will perform well for seven to eight years.

Ease of Movement

Rating: Plush: 3/5 | Medium: 3/5 | Firm (Pillow-Top): 3/5 | Extra Firm: 3/5

Mattresses with memory foam comfort layers can sometimes make a sleeper feel like they are sinking or stuck in one position. However, the Renewed Night Mattress makes it fairly easy to move. While the mattress lacked significant responsiveness, our testers were able to change sleep positions and get in and out of bed without much trouble.

Sex

Rating: Plush: 2/5 | Medium: 3/5 | Firm (Pillow-Top): 3/5 | Extra Firm: 4/5

When it comes to sex, some firmness levels perform better than others, depending on the amount of responsiveness and bounce they offer. The Extra Firm model of the Renewed Night has solid edge support and a slight springiness that will make it a good fit for many couples. Other models in this line may also perform relatively well, though the Plush model might be too soft for some couples.

Off-Gassing

Rating: Plush: 3/5 | Medium: 3/5 | Firm (Pillow-Top): 3/5 | Extra Firm: 3/5

Certain materials used in mattresses, including the memory foam found in the Serta’s Renewed Night, may give off an odor when they are first removed from their plastic packaging. This off-gassing is due to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are generally considered harmless. However, the smell can be unpleasant if you’re sensitive to strong odors.

We found that the Renewed Night does do a moderate amount of off-gassing. However, the odor dispersed fairly quickly.

  • Renewed Sleep: The Renewed Sleep mattresses have a two-layer comfort system made up of a layer of HexCloud gel memory foam and a layer of Serta’s WonderCloud memory foam. The layer of WonderCloud memory foam provides additional contouring and pressure relief.
  • Luminous Sleep: In addition to a layer of HexCloud memory foam and a layer of WonderCloud memory foam, the Luminous Sleep mattresses include a layer of Serta’s BubbleCloud polyfoam, which further enhances cushioning and comfort.

Support Core

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress includes a pocketed coil support core made up of 1000 individually wrapped coils. Individually wrapping the coils allows each one to move freely and independently, resulting in a responsive mattress with a slight bounce that’s less noisy than a traditional innerspring mattress.

The support core also features a polyfoam perimeter designed to improve edge support and increase the usable surface area of the mattress.

How Much Does the Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress Cost?

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Renewed Night Mattress is a quality hybrid mattress that doesn’t break the bank. The cost of Renewed Night straddles the line between a mid-range and luxury mattress and sits at the lower end of the typical cost of a hybrid.

The Renewed Night comes in the full range of standard mattress sizes from twin to California king. Choosing the Renewed Night Firm option with an additional pillow-top layer will slightly increase the overall price.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress FAQ

How Is Serta’s HexCloud Gel Memory Foam Different?

Serta’s HexCloud gel memory foam is infused with gel and manufactured with a repeating pattern of geometric cutouts on the surface of the foam. These features are designed to increase breathability and airflow on the mattress’ surface.

Is a Pillow-Top Mattress More Comfortable?

Pillow-top mattresses may be more comfortable for sleepers who like a mattress with extra cushioning and plushness. However, the comfort level of a pillow-top mattress will depend on a person’s sleep style, body weight, and overall preferences. Our testing team found that the Firm model with the pillow-top worked best for side sleepers and back sleepers weighing over 230 pounds, as well as most stomach sleepers.

The Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress needs a base or foundation like a box spring to support the mattress and promote airflow. If you prefer not to use a box spring, you can also use a platform bed frame with slats.

Is It Easy to Return a Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress?

Serta offers easy returns with the company’s 120-night sleep trial policy. If you don’t like the way your Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress feels, you can request a full refund or free exchange within the first 120 nights.
