Sleep Doctor’s Take: Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress

The Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress is a luxury hybrid with a plush and conforming sleep surface. Its 14-inch profile makes it Puffy’s thickest mattress, with four layers of durable foam and a springy core of individually pocketed coils. Our team found it well-suited for couples as well as side and back sleepers under 130 pounds.

Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress: An introduction

Puffy launched in 2016 and offers mattresses in addition to bed frames and other bedding products. Their flagship Puffy Mattress is an all-foam model with two layers of foam over a dense polyfoam core. The Puffy Lux is a hybrid with three layers of foam atop a core of pocketed coils.

This review focuses on the brand’s luxury offering, the Puffy Royal Hybrid. It’s the company’s tallest mattress, with four layers of foam and a thick support core of pocketed coils. Our team was impressed by the Royal Hybrid’s ability to relieve pressure buildup and reduce motion transfer, making it an excellent choice for couples shopping for a high-end luxury mattress.

We’ll detail the Puffy Royal’s construction, price, and performance to help you decide if it’s the right mattress for you.

How we review

Our in-house testing team has years of experience researching and evaluating mattresses and other sleep products. We apply our rigorous testing methodology to provide you with accurate and detailed performance results that can help you find the best mattress for your unique needs.

What’s it like to sleep on the Puffy Royal Hybrid?

The Puffy Royal Hybrid is distinct for its multiple layers of plush and conforming foam. Lying on the Royal hybrid, you’ll first notice that its soft top layers conform closely to the body, giving the distinctive hug of memory foam

Several foam layers have added features designed to give the bed a high-end feel, including a layer of gel-infused memory foam, a layer of Climate Comfort polyfoam, and a layer of zoned polyfoam that gives extra support to heavier body parts.

The pocketed coils in the support core provide some needed responsiveness to the bed’s otherwise plush surface layers. Due to its hybrid construction and layered foam, the Puffy Royal Hybrid tested well in pressure relief and motion isolation. It is an ideal mattress for couples, especially those under 130 pounds each.

Pros

  • Enhanced motion isolation makes it ideal for couples and light sleepers
  • Ideal mix of softness and support for sleepers under 130 pounds
  • Free shipping, even to Alaska and Hawaii

Cons

  • May be too soft for sleepers over 230 pounds
  • Multiple memory foam layers may inhibit movement
  • High-end price tag

Sleeping positions, body weight, and firmness

A bed’s firmness level can impact both how it feels and how well it promotes healthy spinal alignment. Certain firmness levels are best for sleepers of particular body types and sleep positions.

To provide helpful ratings for all types of sleepers, our testing team is composed of people with different body weights and preferred sleep positions.

The Puffy Royal Hybrid Mattress is a medium (5) on our 10-point firmness scale. This makes the Royal Hybrid an excellent choice for a wide range of sleepers. Our testers found this mattress works best for side and back sleepers under 130 pounds. It may be too soft to provide adequate support for sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds.

Side sleepers

Side sleepers need a mattress that supports their shoulders and hips for proper spinal alignment. The Puffy Royal Hybrid includes a layer of zoned polyfoam designed to provide targeted support to these areas. Our side-sleeping testers under 230 pounds found a good balance of support and comfort on this mattress. Those over 230 pounds sunk in a bit too deeply for proper spinal alignment.

Back sleepers

Back sleepers need a bed that offers targeted lower back support to keep their spines aligned. Only back sleepers under 130 pounds found that the Royal Hybrid provided the right level of support. Testers over 130 pounds found it too soft to sufficiently support their lumbar region.

Stomach sleepers

Stomach sleeping can lead to back pain if the midsection doesn’t get enough pushback from the mattress. Our stomach sleepers under 130 pounds didn’t sink too far into the surface for proper alignment, but the Royal Hybrid did not work well for our stomach sleepers over 130 pounds. These testers found the mattress had too much sink in the middle, allowing their midsection to dip into the mattress so far that it caused their lower back to arch uncomfortably.

Our performance ratings

Our testing team rates each mattress in eight performance categories. They provide a score using our five-point scale. A score of 1 is poor, while a score of 5 is excellent.

Pressure relief

Rating: 4/5

Our testers found that the Puffy Royal Hybrid offered more pressure relief than most hybrid beds, reducing tension in the neck, shoulders, back, and legs. The Royal Hybrid includes a thick comfort system composed of four layers of memory foam and polyfoam. Designed to offer whole-body support, the memory foam closely contours to the body, while the zoned polyfoam provides targeted support to pressure-prone areas.

Temperature neutrality

Rating: 3/5

Puffy includes several materials in the Royal Hybrid that are designed to enhance air circulation and reduce heat retention. While these features helped our testers stay cooler than expected, the conforming foam still trapped some body heat and could be uncomfortable for people who sleep hot. This is typical of plush mattresses that contour to the body, as sinking deeply into a mattress reduces air circulation around the body.

Motion isolation

Rating: 4/5

Motion isolation is a standout feature of the Puffy Royal Hybrid. The four layers of foam in its comfort system effectively absorb vibrations and limit the likelihood that motion will be transferred across the bed’s surface. This means those who sleep with a pet or partner are less likely to feel nighttime movements and changes in position.

Edge support

Rating: 3/5

The Royal Hybrid’s pocketed coils are encased in a layer of high-density polyfoam. This helps reinforce and strengthen the bed’s edge. Foam layers compress under body weight, so this reinforced edge helps give the Royal Hybrid a sturdier border. However, our testing revealed that the thick foam comfort system did compress somewhat around the edges, making it moderately challenging to sit on the bed’s perimeter or use its entire surface.

Durability

Rating: 3/5

Our testing team anticipates that the Puffy Royal Hybrid will meet the average lifespan of a hybrid mattress. The quality materials and robust construction may increase this bed’s durability. However, the lifespan of a mattress depends on several factors, like the sleeper’s preferred position and body type, as well as proper use and care.

Ease of movement

Rating: 3/5

While springs in the support core can make for easier movement, multiple thick foam layers on top can inhibit movement  as they closely contour to the body. Our testers found that ease of movement on the Puffy Royal Hybrid was on par with other hybrids. Testers sank moderately into the surface layers, but found enough pushback from the springs to change positions or get out of bed with relative ease.

Sex

Rating: 3/5

Based on our other performance categories, we rated the Royal Hybrid as similar to other hybrid models when it comes to its suitability for sex. The cooling features and responsiveness of the coil core are helpful for sex, as is the added traction and noise reduction provided by the foam layers. However, the thick foam layers can also make movement more challenging and may leave some feeling restricted to the center of the mattress due to the bed’s average edge support.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 3/5

The Puffy Royal Hybrid contains multiple layers of foam, and it produced a moderate level of off-gassing during our testing. Off-gassing happens when synthetic foam releases volatile organic compounds (VOCs) after being unboxed. Off-gassing lessens with time and unboxing the mattress in a well-ventilated area helps to reduce any odors.

What is the Puffy Royal Hybrid made of?

The Puffy Royal Hybrid contains layers of foam atop a support core of individually pocketed coils. The bed is encased in a stain-resistant and zippered polyester cover that can be removed and washed at home.

The bed’s comfort system begins with a layer of polyfoam infused with a cooling gel, which rests on a layer of memory foam. Next is a layer of polyfoam designed to enhance airflow through the mattress and a layer of zoned support foam, which offers five levels of support under different areas of the body.

The Royal Hybrid’s support core contains a thick layer of individually pocketed coils on top of a final layer of high-density support foam. All foams used in the mattress are free from a range of harmful chemicals and are certified by CertiPUR-US for indoor emissions.

Which Puffy Mattress is right for you?

Puffy offers three mattress models: the Puffy Mattress, the Puffy Lux Mattress, and the Puffy Royal Hybrid. Each model performed differently during our testing process, which may be helpful if you find yourself choosing between models. All three mattresses perform best for back and side sleepers under 130 pounds.

The flagship Puffy Mattress is a medium (5) all-foam mattress with a lower price-point than the Royal Hybrid. Although it slept warmer than the Royal Hybrid, it excelled at relieving pressure and supporting sleepers under 130 pounds.

The Puffy Lux Mattress is a medium (5) hybrid. It slightly outperformed the Royal Hybrid in motion isolation and supporting back sleepers under 130 pounds, but didn’t provide as much support around the bed’s edges, reducing its usable surface area.
