As their name suggests, king size mattresses are the largest standard mattress size available. They offer generous space to move around, spread out, and share with others. Kings are perfect for some sleepers, but it’s important to consider a number of factors when choosing a mattress size, including your budget, available room space, sleeping habits, and the presence of co-sleepers.

To help decide whether a king size mattress is right for you, we’ll go over king size bed dimensions and how they compare to other standard mattress sizes. We’ll also explain which types of sleepers benefit most from king size mattresses, and explain how a standard king compares to the longer California king size.

Dimensions of a King Size Bed

A standard king size mattress measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. Out of the six major mattress sizes — twin, twin XL, full, queen, king, and California king — king size beds are the widest. Some manufacturers also offer a split king size, which consists of two twin XL mattresses side-by-side. The total measurements of these are the same as a standard king, but the separation allows those with adjustable beds to change the position, firmness or feel of each side individually.

The measurements of normal mattress sizes are standardized so that you can easily find corresponding sizes for bedding and accessories like bed frames. That said, the precise measurements may vary slightly between manufacturers.

What Is the Difference Between a King and California King?

King and California king mattresses are both suitable for couples, but they address slightly different needs. At 72 inches wide and 84 inches long, California king mattresses are the longest standard bed size available, making them great for tall sleepers and anyone who sleeps with a pet at the foot of the bed.

However, California kings are 4 inches narrower than a standard king, which means they offer less surface area to move or stretch out side-to-side. They’re also generally the most expensive standard mattress size.

Who Is a King Size Mattress Best For?

King size mattresses are best for families, couples, sleepers who share the bed with pets, or anyone who wants more mattress space to spread out or move around. While king size beds are the same length as queens, they provide an extra 6 inches of width. This extra space can make co-sleeping more comfortable, especially if one sleeper tends to switch positions during the night. Tall sleepers may want to opt for a California king, which adds more length at the bottom.

Because of their larger size, the best king size mattresses can add a touch of opulence to the right room. However, for this same reason, they’re not a great match for small spaces. They’re also more expensive than smaller sizes, so people who want a larger bed sometimes choose a queen size to save money.
