Birch Mattress Review

Birch Mattress: An Introduction
Birch was launched in 2019, as a subsidiary of Helix. Birch makes eco-friendly mattresses, pillows, bases, and other bedding accessories. The brand ships directly to customers for free.
The Birch Natural Mattress is a springy, durable hybrid mattress. Its comfort system blends heat-wicking wool with ventilated Talalay latex. The pocketed coil core has a reinforced perimeter to strengthen edge support. A versatile medium firm (6) feel and 11-inch height suits most sleep preferences. The model comes in all standard mattress sizes.
We breakdown the Birch Mattress’ materials, construction, and performance ratings based on in-house testing. We also discuss what the different product certifications actually mean, as well as shopping tips to find the best deal.
How We Review
Our dedicated sleep specialists have spent years researching and testing hundreds of mattresses. We assess important features like pressure relief and motion isolation using a five-point scale. Along with physical testing, we use thermometers, VOC detectors, and body-mapping tools to rate performance.
We consider all sleep positions and body types when evaluating each mattress. This helps us determine whether or not a model is compatible with your sleep style.
What’s It Like to Sleep on the Birch Mattress?
The Birch Natural Mattress has a bouncy yet supportive feel. Soft wool layers gently pad sleepers while drawing out excess heat. Natural Talalay latex offers moderate contouring with minimal sinkage. This type of latex is springy and relatively lightweight, so it’s more breathable than most types of foam. Its responsiveness also makes changing sleep positions less cumbersome.
A sturdy pocketed coil core minimizes sagging so the spine stays in alignment. The entire mattress feels stable since the sides are reinforced with sturdier coils. This means that couples shouldn’t feel restricted to the center of the bed.
The mattress’ medium firm (6) feel accommodates all sleep positions. Ventilated latex and heat-wicking cotton and wool help the mattress dissipate heat. This is a major asset if you live in a warm climate or tend to sleep hot.

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness
While some mattresses are more versatile than others, a universally perfect model doesn’t exist. A mattress’ comfort and support depends on your body type, sleep position, and personal preferences.
Your body weight determines how much you sink into a mattress. Sleepers over 230 pounds therefore need a firmer design that minimizes compression. Conversely, people under 130 pounds benefit from a softer mattress with notable contouring. Those between 130 and 230 pounds sleep comfortably on a wider range of feels.
Each sleep position also has different firmness requirements. Stomach and back sleepers need a moderately firm to firm mattress to support the midsection. Side sleepers generally profit from a plusher surface that cushions the hips and shoulders.
Our Birch Mattress ratings factor in both body size and sleep style.
Birch Mattress Ratings
Side Sleepers
Our testers who favor side sleeping enjoyed the Birch Mattress’ responsive feel. The Talalay latex evenly conformed to the hips and shoulders, helping the spine stay level. The bouncy pocketed coil core made changing from one side to the other very easy.
While all of our side sleepers gained notable pressure relief, the mattress’ medium firm (6) feel was especially fitting for those over 130 pounds.
Back Sleepers
A moderately firm mattress is usually a sound choice for back sleepers, and the Birch Mattress is no exception. Unlike some types of memory foam, the Talalay latex comfort system doesn’t overly conform to the lower back. Its considerable push-back encourages a straighter spine while still cushioning the shoulders and legs. The pocketed coil core also reinforces the lumbar region.
Our back sleepers under 230 pounds all rated the mattress favorably, but those over 230 pounds would find more support from a firmer bed.
Stomach Sleepers
Close-contouring mattresses can be problematic for stomach sleepers if they do not support the hips enough to promote proper spinal alignment. The Birch Mattress is exceptionally responsive, so it resists deep sinkage below the midsection. A sturdy pocketed coil core also limits sagging so the hips and shoulders stay level.
Similar to back sleepers, stomach sleepers over 230 pounds may prefer a firmer sleep surface for better support.

What Is the Birch Mattress Made Of?
The Birch Natural Mattress is a five-layer hybrid with a soft organic cotton cover. Underneath is a natural fire barrier made from wool and rayon. A second wool batting layer gently cushions sleepers while wicking away heat and moisture.
Next, a layer of natural Talalay latex evenly contours sleepers without allowing deep sinkage. The latex is breathable and fairly lightweight, but tiny perforations are added to enhance airflow. Latex is known for its durability and bounce, so it resists premature softening.
The support core features sturdy pocketed steel coils. The sides are reinforced with thicker coils to strengthen edge support. Wool batting stabilizes the upper layers while acting as a second flame retardant.
The Birch Mattress has a number of certifications that vouch for its quality and sustainability. The cotton cover is certified organic by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). Eco-Institut and OEKO-TEX certifications indicate that the latex doesn’t contain harmful chemicals. A Rainforest Alliance badge shows the latex was sustainably produced. It also attests to fair labor practices. The entire mattress is GREENGUARD Gold certified, showing it meets a very high standard for low VOC emissions and material safety.

Should You Upgrade to the Birch Luxe Mattress?
Shoppers may want to consider Birch’s higher end model, the Birch Luxe Mattress. The slightly taller hybrid features a quilted Euro-top, plush organic cashmere, and zoned lumbar support. It has sturdier coils around the entire perimeter, which can be helpful if you have a pet.
Both models have great temperature control, but the Luxe is even better at staying cool. Otherwise, the two hybrids feel and perform similarly.
Birch Luxe Natural Mattress
This model is an upgraded version of the Birch Natural Mattress. It has extra comfort features like a quilted Euro-top and cashmere batting. The pocketed coil core is zoned to support spinal alignment, and all four sides are reinforced with stronger coils.
Sleepers who appreciate extra strong edge support and temperature control may want to pay a little more for the Luxe Natural Mattress.
Birch Kids Natural Mattress
This dual-sided hybrid is designed to support growing bodies. A firmer side is intended for kids ages 3 to 7 since they require more support. The reverse side has a plusher feel for children 8 through 12.
The kids model uses similar materials as the Birch adult mattresses, including an organic cotton cover and wool batting. A 6-inch pocketed coil core is lined with Talalay latex to support developing spines. The mattress is GOTS, GREENGUARD Gold and Eco-Institut certified, all showing that the materials meet strict safety guidelines.
The Birch Kids Mattress is pricier than the typical childrens mattress, but it’s also designed to be useful for a wide age range.
