If you sleep hot at night, look for a pillow made from shredded foam or natural materials like down or cotton. These types of pillows have good airflow, which prevents hot air from being trapped against your skin. Gel memory foam pillows are also a good choice, since they also incorporate heat-reducing gel in the foam itself.

Memory foam and latex pillows usually last for up to three years, while down, feather, down alternative, and cotton pillows all have an expected lifespan of one to two years. You should also replace your pillow when it becomes soiled or develops lumps, or if you start to experience allergies or neck and shoulder pain.

Pillows are put into different categories depending on their filling:
-Memory foam pillows are filled with shredded or solid memory foam for a close hug that adapts to provide customized neck support -Down or feather pillows use the inner down or outer plumage of ducks or geese to create a pillow that is durable and fluffy
-Down alternative pillow use synthetic fibers to recreate the feel of a down pillow at a much lower price
-Latex pillows are filled with natural or synthetic latex foam, which can be shredded for adaptable comfort or in block form for more support
-Cotton pillows, whether 100% cotton or blended with synthetic fibers, are usually fluffy and breathable but may flatten over time
-Specialty pillows — such as those with buckwheat hulls, kapok fibers, or microbeads — often have a unique feel that may appeal to people with specific preferences

People have different loft (height) and firmness requirements depending on their usual sleeping position. You can choose a pillow with adjustable loft and firmness, or use the following guidelines to narrow down your selection:
-Back sleepers usually prefer medium to medium-firm pillows with a three to five inch loft
-Side sleepers need a pillow with a loft of about three to six inches, depending on the width of their shoulders, plus a medium to firm feel
-Stomach sleepers should look for a soft pillow with less than three inches of loft so that your neck stays in line with your shoulders

There are two types of memory foam pillows, each with their own benefits and drawbacks.

Solid memory foam pillows mold to the shape of your head and neck to provide comfortable, reliable support. These durable pillows tend to sleep quite warm, but you can avoid this issue by choosing a gel memory foam pillow with airflow features like perforations and mesh panels.

Shredded memory pillows are often adjustable, allowing you to change the firmness or loft of your pillow by adding or removing filling. These pillows also sleep quite cool, since airflow between the pieces of foam prevents heat from building up. However, shredded memory foam pillows must be fluffed regularly to redistribute the foam.
