Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress: An Introduction

Serta has been making mattresses for over 90 years. The company’s Perfect Sleeper line is made up of hybrid mattresses that combine memory foam and pocketed coils to provide impressive pressure relief and edge support in a range of price-points.

We’ll focus on the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid, which combines memory foam layers and a zoned pocketed coil support core. Shoppers can choose between three firmness levels, as well as pillow-top upgrades.

We’ll cover everything you need to know about the Serta Perfect Sleeper X’s materials, construction, price, and customer service policies. We’ll also discuss how this mattress performed when we put it to the test in our sleep lab.

How We Review

Our goal is to help you choose the right mattress for your needs. We do this by conducting a wide range of hands-on tests in our sleep lab. Our testing methodology covers key performance metrics and includes input from sleepers with a diverse set of body sizes and sleep styles.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Serta Perfect Sleeper X Mattress?

The Serta Perfect Sleeper X is a hybrid mattress that strikes a balance between cushioning and support. The combination of pocketed coils and memory foam provides pressure relief without sacrificing durability. Although the mattress’ performance varies by firmness level, our testing showed that most models excel at isolating movement and have solid edge support that makes it easy to get into and out of bed.

Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Multiple firmness options cater to the needs of many kinds of sleepers
  • Hybrid construction provides standout comfort and support for sleepers across different weight and position groups
  • Zoned coils push back against extra weight in the midsection

Cons

  • Contouring memory foam may not be ideal for hot sleepers
  • Softer designs cost more than the firm model

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

We rate mattress firmness on a 10-point scale. The Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid is available in three designs: "Plush" (4 out of 10), "Medium" (6), and "Firm" (7).

Finding the right firmness level for your needs depends on your bodyweight, favorite sleep position, and personal comfort preferences. For example, sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds often prefer a firm mattress because of the added support, while those under 130 typically prefer a softer feel.

Based on our tests and this mattress’ range of models, we found that the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid offers good to excellent comfort for many different kinds of sleepers.

Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid – Plush | Firmness: Medium Soft (4)

Under 130 lbs. 130-230 lbs. Over 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers 9/10 7.5/10 6.5/10
Back Sleepers 8/10 6/10 5.5/10
Stomach Sleepers 7/10 5.5/10 5/10

Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid – Medium | Firmness: Medium Firm (6)

Under 130 lbs. 130-230 lbs. Over 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers 7.5/10 8.5/10 8/10
Back Sleepers 8.5/10 7.5/10 6.5/10
Stomach Sleepers 7.5/10 6.5/10 5.5/10

Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid - Firm | Firmness: Firm (7)

Under 130 lbs. 130-230 lbs. Over 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers 6/10 7.5/10 8.5/10
Back Sleepers 8/10 9/10 7/10
Stomach Sleepers 8.5/10 8/10 7.5/10

Side Sleepers

Our testers who sleep on their side reported very different experiences depending on their body hype and the bed's firmness level. Generally speaking, side sleepers under 130 pounds found that the contouring memory foam layer did an excellent job of cradling their curves and relieving pressure in key areas like the hips and shoulders. Side sleepers up to 230 pounds tended to prefer the medium soft (4) model, while side sleepers over 230 pounds felt more comfortable on the medium firm (6) and firm (7) designs.

Back Sleepers

For many back sleepers, the Perfect Sleeper X provides an ideal balance of cushioning and support. Our testers who sleep on their back and weigh over 230 pounds were especially impressed with the lumbar support provided by the firm option. The medium firm model was also a standout for our testers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. Our back sleepers under 130 pounds preferred the contouring of the medium soft design.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers need a mattress that’s supportive enough to prevent the midsection from sinking in too far while still being soft enough to keep painful pressure points from developing around the hips and shoulders. The stomach sleepers on our team who weigh over 130 pounds found that the combination of pocketed coils and dense memory foam in the firm model offered good support and contouring. Stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds preferred the softer models.

Our Performance Ratings

Pressure Relief

8/10

With its contouring layer of Serta’s gel memory foam, the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid offers a body-hugging feel that doesn’t put pressure on common pain points like the shoulders and hips. It’s important to note that a bed’s ability to reduce pressure depends on the sleeper’s body weight, sleep position, and the firmness level of the mattress. Our team found that the Plush model offers the most cushioning, while the Firm option conforms to a moderate extent.

Temperature Control

8/10

Our testers found that most versions of the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid offer a decent level of temperature control to help keep sleepers cool. The coil support core and gel-infused comfort layer allow for good airflow, and the breathable material in the cover is designed to be cool to the touch. However, the Plush model trapped more heat than the other options, making it less than ideal for hot sleepers.

Motion Isolation

7.5/10

Motion isolation is important for sleepers who move a lot during the night and don’t want to disturb their bed partner. Memory foam is known for its ability to prevent motion transfer across the surface of a mattress, and the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid’s memory foam comfort layer helped it perform well in this category. Our testers noted that the Plush and Medium models did a good job of preventing motion transfer, especially compared to the firm design.

Perimeter Support

7.5/10

Foam comfort layers can sometimes sink excessively at the edge of the bed, but the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid’s pocketed coils provide good support throughout the bed, including at its edges. To reinforce the perimeter, the coil support core is surrounded by a dense rail of polyfoam. This adds structure to the mattress sides and helps support your body weight when you sit or sleep near the edge of the bed.

Durability

7/10

After analyzing the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid's construction, we estimate this mattress will perform for 6 to 7.5 years before a replacement is needed. This is on par with the average hybrid mattress lifespan. Firmness matters to an extent, as the softer model will probably develop indentations in its surface before the other two designs, but all three share comparable durability scores.

Ease of Movement

7/10

Mattresses with memory foam comfort layers can sometimes make a sleeper feel like they are sinking or stuck in one position. However, the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid makes it fairly easy to move. While the mattress lacked significant responsiveness, our testers were able to change sleep positions and get in and out of bed without much trouble.

Sex

7/10

When it comes to sex, some firmness levels perform better than others, depending on the amount of responsiveness and bounce they offer. The firm Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid has solid edge support and a gentle springiness that will make it a good fit for many couples. Other models in this line may also perform relatively well, though the Plush model might be too soft for some couples.

Odor Emissions

7/10

Certain materials used in mattresses, including the memory foam found in the Serta’s Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid, may give off an odor when the beds are first removed from their plastic packaging. This off-gassing is due to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are generally considered harmless. However, the smell can be unpleasant if you’re sensitive to strong odors. We found that the Perfect Sleeper X Hybrid does do a moderate amount of off-gassing. However, the odor dispersed fairly quickly.

Pillow-top mattresses may be more comfortable for sleepers who like a mattress with extra cushioning and plushness. However, the comfort level of a pillow-top mattress will depend on a person’s sleep style, body weight, and overall preferences.
