Why CPAP Supplies Need Replacing
Replacing CPAP supplies like filters, tubing, the water chamber, and mask parts keeps obstructive sleep apnea therapy running smoothly. When parts aren't replaced on schedule, problems can occur. For example, the seal that keeps air from escaping may loosen, masks may become dirty and irritate skin, and tubing may degrade, compromising air quality.
CPAP Replacement Schedule
Replace your CPAP machine supplies according to the schedule provided by your CPAP manufacturer, or according to the schedule we've shared below. Most health insurance companies will cover CPAP supply replacement according to this schedule, but not more frequently.

Nasal Cushions or Pillows
Nasal cushions and nasal pillows need replacing more frequently than many other supplies — every two weeks — because they touch your face. When nasal cushions or nasal pillows aren't replaced on schedule, dirt and oil can build up, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. This can then create odors, irritate skin, and loosen the seal that keeps air from escaping.
On occasion, you may want to replace nasal cushions or pillows earlier than scheduled. If the edges are stiff or cracked, the material has become discolored, or you're developing skin irritation near where the cushions or pillows touch your face, try swapping them out for a new set.
Full-Face Mask Cushion
Unlike nasal cushions, a full-face mask cushion usually only needs to be replaced once a month. However, some manufacturers may recommend replacing cushions that connect to CPAP masks more often, so check your manufacturer's recommendations to be sure.

As with nasal cushions, full-face masks that aren't changed on time can collect dirt and oil, grow bacteria, and irritate the skin. These should also be replaced early if they become stiff, develop cracks, begin smelling bad, change colors, or irritate the skin.
CPAP Machine Filters
Most new CPAP machines use disposable filters that should be replaced once a month. Washable or reusable filters, which are less common, should be replaced every six months. Replacing CPAP filters on time helps ensure you're breathing in clean air during treatment. Old CPAP machine filters become less effective with time and may cause a runny nose or sneezing.
If you notice a filter has become discolored or has a hole or rip in it, replace it immediately, instead of waiting until the next scheduled time.
Mask Frame
Mask frames generally need to be replaced every three months. When they aren't replaced on time, they may lose their firmness, causing air leaks.
Hoses and Tubing
CPAP tubing and hoses generally need replacing every three months, whether they are heated or not. Replacing this part on schedule helps keep your CPAP machine operating its best. If your tubing shifts from transparent to opaque or develops cracks in it, replace it earlier than scheduled.

Headgear
Headgear should be replaced every six months, and waiting longer than that may lead to an ill-fitting mask. If your headgear looks like it's stretched out since you began using it or you notice yourself regularly tightening it to get the same fit and avoid leaks, replace it early.
Chin Strap
Some CPAP headgear systems involve chin straps, and some CPAP users buy separate chin straps to help keep their mask in place. If you use a chin strap, it should be replaced every six months, just like headgear. Also like headgear, chin straps should be replaced early if the strap becomes loose or stretched out.
Humidifier Water Chamber
Most new CPAP machines offer humidification capabilities, which is why they each contain a humidifier water chamber. These plastic water tubs should be replaced every six months to keep the water clean and the machine running smoothly. If the humidifier water tub becomes cloudy or discolored, or develops cracks or visible areas of wear, it should be replaced immediately.
CPAP Machine
CPAP machine manufacturers and respiratory therapists suggest replacing your CPAP machine every five years to avoid a gradual decline in treatment effectiveness, while also keeping you up-to-date on the latest CPAP therapy technology and features.
Heated Humidifier
Many CPAP machines have built-in heated humidifiers, but on some models, the CPAP machine itself and the heated humidifier can be separated. In these cases, many people suggest that, like the CPAP machine, the heated humidifier should be replaced every five years to keep the entire treatment system running effectively.
Signs It's Time to Replace Your CPAP Supplies
It's best to replace your CPAP supplies on the schedule outlined by your CPAP machine's manufacturer, whether they look like they need replacing or not. CPAP supplies can begin degrading without that being visible to the naked eye.
That said, there are cases in which you should replace your CPAP supplies earlier than scheduled. Replace a CPAP supply if it:
-
Changes in color, whether becoming faded, stained, or miscolored
-
Changes from transparent to opaque
-
Looks worn out or thinned
-
Becomes stiff when it wasn't previously
-
Stretches out, can't be tightened like before, or provides a loose fit
-
Develops an odor
-
Develops cracks, holes, or indentations
-
Looks old, worn out, or notably different from how it looked when new
Tips for Staying on Schedule
To ensure you’re replacing your CPAP supplies on time, here are two things that might be helpful:
-
Keep track of your replacement schedule: Because CPAP machines require multiple supplies, with each needing to be replaced on a different schedule, memorizing replacement dates won't work for most people. Instead, use a calendar, planner, or task app to provide an external reminder of when it's time to replace various supplies.
-
Order in advance: You can only replace supplies on time if you have them at home at the scheduled replacement time, so order your supplies in advance. Many insurance companies allow you to order a few months' worth of supplies at a time. Talk with your insurance provider to identify when and how you are allowed to order more supplies, then keep as many as you are able on-hand.
How to Extend the Life of Your Supplies
Cleaning your CPAP machine and supplies regularly can help your supplies stay in good shape for the amount of time they are supposed to. That said, you do not want to try and extend the life of your CPAP supplies beyond the replacement schedule provided by the manufacturer, since supplies can degrade without wear and tear being visible to the naked eye.
