Avocado Mattress: Our Verdict

The Avocado Mattress is an organic mattress made with high-quality, sustainably sourced materials. Available in standard and pillow-top versions, the hybrid construction balances latex in the comfort layer with individually pocketed and zoned coils in the support core. This combination creates light contouring and a responsive, firmer feel that works particularly well for sleepers who shift positions during the night.

The Avocado Mattress is more expensive than other hybrid models, but many shoppers may find the high-quality materials and durable construction justifies the higher price-point. We found the Avocado Mattress to be a versatile pick for a wide range of sleeper types.

Avocado Mattress: An Introduction

Avocado is a sustainable sleep products brand that incorporates sustainable materials and manufacturing. Their mattresses include hybrid and latex models in standard sizes, crib mattresses, and low-profile kids mattresses for trundle and bunk beds.

We’ll cover the Avocado Green Mattress, Avocado’s mid-range hybrid, highlighting what it’s like to sleep on the mattress and how it performs in key sleep performance categories across body types and sleep positions. We’ll also examine how it compares to other Avocado mattresses and look at purchasing information and other frequently asked questions so you can determine if it’s the right mattress for your needs.

How We Review

Our testing team has personally tested hundreds of mattresses using a methodology designed to be objective and accurate. Our testing criteria encompasses the aspects of mattress performance that influence overall comfort and functionality, which helps us determine the best mattresses in various categories. We then present our findings to you so you can establish the best mattress for your needs.

What's It Like to Sleep on the Avocado Mattress?

The Avocado Mattress offers the signature hybrid combination of comfort and support. An organic latex comfort layer and zoned coils give it a responsive feel that works especially well for sleepers who prefer a firmer, less conforming mattress.

Both models offer a responsive and buoyant sleep surface. The individually wrapped coils in the support core help create additional pushback and prevent sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress. While the pillow-top version provides more cushioning, it lacks the close contouring of a memory foam mattress. This makes the Avocado Mattress a good option for shoppers who value a high-end performance, a firmer feel, and organic and sustainable materials.

We’ll highlight some of the Avocado Mattress’ most notable features and what to consider when deciding if it’s right for your sleep needs.

Avocado Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Organic, eco-conscious materials
  • Multiple independent sustainable certifications
  • Latex comfort layer in two firmness options
  • Zoned support core made of individually wrapped coils

Cons

  • Pricier than other hybrid mattress options
  • May be too firm for some body types and sleep positions
  • Heavier overall weight requires sturdy bed frame

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

Our testing revealed the Avocado Mattress standard option to be a 7 on the 10-point firmness scale. The pillow-top version is slightly softer with a medium firm (6) feel, which provides a balanced feel that most sleepers find comfortable and supportive. Our team of testers is intentionally diverse so we can best determine how sleepers across different weight categories and sleep positions respond to the firmness level of each model.

Side Sleepers

Our side-sleeping testers, particularly those over 130 pounds, preferred the deeper contouring and pressure relief of the pillow-top model. Side sleepers over 230 pounds gave the pillow-top version excellent marks, citing a blend of responsive comfort and support. While the standard version was less supportive for side sleepers under 230 pounds, heavier sleepers across all sleep positions enjoyed the lighter contouring. The Avocado Mattress was the least comfortable for testers under 130 pounds, who found both versions of the mattress to be too firm.

Back Sleepers

While the pillow-top option was too soft for back sleepers over 130 pounds, the standard model suited those over 130 pounds. The standard Avocado Mattress worked particularly well for back-sleeping testers between 130 and 230 pounds. Testers in this weight group found that the gently conforming latex and pushback from the zoned support core enhanced spinal alignment, helping to relieve pressure points. Back sleepers over 230 pounds also enjoyed the standard model’s balance of springy latex and zoned support.

Stomach Sleepers

We found the standard model worked best for stomach sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds. The combination of responsive latex with sturdy pushback from the zoned support core helped reduce sinkage around the hips. The firmer feel also provided stomach sleepers over 230 pounds extra support to the middle of the body, helping to promote spinal alignment. The Avocado’s pillow-top version was highly rated by our stomach sleepers under 130 pounds, as the softer feel and extra cushioning relieved pressure points.

Our Performance Ratings

Our testing team evaluated the Avocado Green Mattress across key performance categories, including pressure relief, temperature neutrality, and durability. We use a 5-point scale for our ratings, with 1 being poor and 5 being excellent.

Pressure Relief

Rating: 3/5 (Standard), 4/5 (Pillow-Top)

A 2-inch layer of latex in the standard model offers light contouring and bounce to cradle curves and support joints. However, the pillow-top version’s additional layer of latex provides deeper contouring and better pressure relief, especially for side sleepers. Both options feature individually wrapped springs in the support core, which help alleviate pressure points by delivering zoned support that keeps the spine aligned.

Temperature Neutrality

Rating: 4/5

Latex is a naturally temperature neutral material and promotes airflow in the comfort layer, helping to keep sleepers cool. The Avocado Mattress also uses organic wool and cotton in the upper layers for added breathability and moisture-wicking capability. This combination of materials makes it a great choice for those who tend to sleep hot or live in warmer climates.

Motion Isolation

Rating: 3/5

While all-foam mattresses tend to offer better motion isolation, hybrids still offer a relatively stable sleep surface. This is particularly true if the mattress uses individually wrapped coils in the support core, which helps isolate motion. The Avocado’s use of zoned coils and organic latex in the comfort layer also prevents movement from transferring across the surface.

Edge Support

Rating: 4/5

The Avocado Mattress’ zoned support includes reinforced coils along the perimeter. Additionally, the latex’s density helps keep the shape of the edge under pressure. This combination of materials increases the usable sleep surface and makes it easier for sleepers to get in and out of bed.

Durability

Rating: 4/5

The Avocado Mattress is made from sustainably sourced and high-quality materials. The steel coils in the support core provide pushback, which prevents sleepers from sinking into the mattress and sagging indentations from forming. The organic latex in the comfort layer is naturally durable and made without seams that can break down or separate over time. With quality materials and a hybrid design, the Avocado Mattress can provide proper support beyond the average seven-year lifespan of a typical hybrid.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 5/5

Latex is known for its natural responsiveness and buoyancy that keeps sleepers from sinking into the mattress. The Avocado’s use of organic latex in the comfort layer combined with noticeable pushback from the zoned support core creates a sleep surface that’s ultra-responsive to movement.

Sex

Rating: 5/5

The exceptional bounce of Dunlop latex in the comfort layer combined with supportive coils and a reinforced perimeter offer a responsive and large usable surface for couples. This results in a highly adaptable sleep surface that responds quickly to changes in position and pressure. The pillow-top model slightly dampens the ease of movement due to its additional layer of cushioning, but couples should still find it provides ample support.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 4/5

The Avocado Mattress holds several sustainable certifications. These certifications ensure the mattress contains fewer chemicals that can cause off-gassing odors, meaning any noticeable odors from new Avocado mattresses are due to the natural smell of the materials rather than chemical off-gassing. These smells are minimal and should dissipate quickly.

What Is the Avocado Mattress Made Of?

Both versions of the Avocado Green Mattress feature a 100% organic cotton cover certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS). The cover is hand-tufted with wool and uses ribbons to hold the mattress layers securely in place without the use of chemical solvents or adhesives.

A layer of 100% GOTS-certified organic wool beneath the cover is breathable, fire-retardant, and certified free of harmful chemicals by OEKO-TEX. In the standard model of the Avocado Mattress, the wool layer is followed by 2 inches of organic Dunlop latex certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). The pillow-top model adds a second 2-inch organic latex layer.

Both the standard and the pillow-top versions feature an 8-inch zoned support core made of recycled steel coils individually wrapped in polypropylene. These coils come in three different gauges — 14, 16, and 17 — that offer support to different areas of the body. Another 1-inch layer of organic Dunlop latex provides a sturdy foundation for the coils.

Avocado Green Mattresses are Greenguard Gold and Formaldehyde Free Certified. This means the mattresses meet strict low emissions and chemical exposure standards during third-party testing.

Which Avocado Mattress Is Right for You?

In addition to the Avocado Green Mattress, Avocado makes four other mattress models. The Vegan Mattress replaces the Green Mattress’ wool layer with cotton but is otherwise similar in terms of feel and performance. The Eco Organic Mattress is a more affordable alternative to the Green Mattress that features similar materials and a slightly lower profile. While the Eco Organic Mattress was less effective at motion isolation and ease of movement during testing, it performed just as well as the Green in other categories.

The Organic Luxury Mattress is Avocado’s most luxurious mattress. Available in a standard or plush model, the mattress features a higher profile and softer feel than the Green as well as 17 layers of high-quality materials. While lux in feel and craftsmanship, many sleepers — especially stomach and back sleepers — found the Organic Luxury to be too soft to promote spinal alignment. In contrast, the Avocado Latex Mattress features a 9-inch profile and a more responsive and firmer feel that particularly suits back and stomach sleepers.

Avocado Mattress FAQ

Should I Get an Avocado Mattress With a Pillow-Top?

The Avocado Mattress pillow-top model can be a good option for side sleepers over 130 pounds as well as back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. The pillow-top adds an extra 2 inches of latex to the comfort layer for a softer feel and more conforming capability.

Is the Avocado Mattress Good for Sleepers Over 230 pounds?

The Avocado Mattress can work well for heavy sleepers over 230 pounds, but it’s important to consider your preferred sleep position when deciding between the standard or the pillow-top options. Side sleepers over 230 pounds benefit from the pillow-top version’s added cushioning, while the standard option better supports back and stomach sleepers.

Is the Avocado Mattress Hypoallergenic?

Because there is latex in the construction, Avocado does not list their mattresses as hypoallergenic. Although the latex is 100% GOLS-certified organic and does not come in direct contact with sleepers, it’s still possible that latex allergies could be triggered by sleeping on a latex mattress.

Do Avocado Mattresses Smell?

Upon opening a new Avocado Mattress, there may be a slight smell from the organic materials since they have been vacuumed sealed in plastic. However, the Avocado Mattress is constructed without the components and chemicals that typically result in off-gassing odors. The brand’s mattresses have multiple certifications that ensure low emissions and eco-friendly standards.
