The soft (3) option offers a more plush, pressure-relieving feeling that you can sink into more deeply, though it’s softer memory foam makes it a bit harder to move around on. The firm (7) option conforms significantly less while still maintaining the contouring properties of memory foam.

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt, like all mattresses, has its pros and cons that need careful consideration when selecting a mattress that feels right for you.

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

Our team evaluated both models of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt, rating them as a soft (3) and firm (7) on our 10-point firmness scale. People with different body weights and habitual sleep positions have different needs in a mattress, and we found that most sleepers should be able to find the right blend of comfort and support on one of the two available firmness options.

Most sleepers on our team preferred the firm model, noting that it was particularly well suited for back and stomach sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds, as well as for side sleepers over 230 pounds.

The soft version appealed to a more targeted group of testers. We found that the soft model was sufficiently plush for side sleepers under 130 pounds. Back sleepers under 130 pounds liked both models, though some preferred the soft model due to its extra pressure relief.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers generally prefer a mattress on the softer side, which helps to cushion the shoulders and hips and keep the spine in alignment. The soft model was ideal for the side sleepers below 130 pounds on our team. Our testers over 130 pounds found it a bit too soft, preferring the increased support found in the firm model.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need a somewhat firmer mattress to keep the spine aligned. Our tests found that the firm model was the better choice for most sleepers, especially for those between 130 and 230 pounds. Those under 130 pounds may prefer the soft option if they like more pressure relief or the firm option if they appreciate more support.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers tend to want the most firmness to support their midsection, and we found that the firm model was the best option for stomach sleepers of any body weight. A mattress that is too soft can put pressure on a stomach sleeper’s lower back.

Our evaluators put each mattress through the paces to evaluate performance characteristics on a five-point scale, from poor (1) to excellent (5).

Pressure Relief

Tempur-Pedic is well known for its pressure relieving memory foams, and our team found that both models performed relatively well in this category. Our testers noted that the soft model comfortably adjusted to the body and relieved pressure in key areas, hence the higher rating. The firm model also provided pressure relief, but its sturdier foams offered less contouring around the shoulders, hips, and back, areas in which pressure tends to build up.

Temperature Neutrality

A temperature-neutral mattress is an important consideration for those who sleep hot or live in humid environments. It can be challenging to find this trait among mattresses that use memory foam, which conforms closely and limits air flow around the body. To combat this tendency, Tempur-Pedic uses open-cell foams, which are intended to enhance their breathability. Overall, our team found that the temperature neutrality of the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt is on par with other all-foam mattresses.

Motion Isolation

The all-foam design of TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt offers very good motion isolation, regardless of which model you choose. The mattress effectively absorbed movement during each of our tests, reducing disturbances that could be caused by a partner’s tossing and turning during the night. This feature is particularly beneficial for light sleepers and couples.

Edge Support

Edge support is a measure of how well a mattress supports weight along its perimeter. As is typical of an all-foam mattress design, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt did not excel in this category, though the edges of the firm model did feel more stable during our tests.

Durability

Rating: 4/5

All-foam mattresses are at risk of premature softening and body impressions unless high-quality materials are used. Our evaluators noted that TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt uses quality foams, leading us to believe the mattress will hold up well against sagging and indentations over the years. We think this mattress should last longer than the average for all-foam models, which is six to seven years.

Ease of Movement

Rating: 3/5 Firm, 2/5 Soft

Ease of movement can be a challenge for beds that use soft memory foams, as sinking into the bed can make it more challenging to change position or crawl across its surface. Our testers found the firm model offered better ease of movement due to its less conforming nature. The soft model, while very comfortable, conforms more closely to the body and restricted movement for our testers, making it slightly harder for them to change positions.

Sex

To evaluate a mattress for this category, our team considers aspects of a bed’s performance that are beneficial during sex, like ease of movement, temperature neutrality, and edge support. While the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt provides comfort and pressure relief, it lacks the springiness that couples often prefer during sex. Both models don’t offer much bounce due to their all-foam construction, and the more conforming nature of the foam can inhibit easy movement.

Off-Gassing

Rating: 2/5

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt produced higher than average off-gassing during our tests. Upon unboxing, sleepers may notice an initial odor due to the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). However, the odor typically dissipates within a few days, particularly if the mattress is left to air out in a well-ventilated room.

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt mattress begins with a polyblend cover that can be removed and machine washed. Below the cover, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt uses more of the brand’s signature TEMPUR memory foam than any other mattress in the TEMPUR-Adapt collection.

A layer of Original TEMPUR or TEMPUR-ES material, depending on the chosen firmness level, sits atop a layer of TEMPUR-APR+ memory foam. TEMPUR-APR+ is the brand’s most luxurious foam, designed to be even more conforming than other TEMPUR foams. 

Both comfort layers rest on a layer of dense polyfoam, engineered to give the mattress structure and durability. All the foams are certified by CertiPUR-US and free from a range of known harmful chemicals.

As its name suggests, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt Mattress is a luxury foam mattress. In return for the higher price-point, the LuxeAdapt features a relatively tall 13-inch design, uses high-quality materials, and comes with free White Glove delivery to your bedroom and the removal of your old mattress.
