Fisher & Paykel’s Nova Nasal Mask is engineered for comfort and ease of use. It’s a nasal mask that features two proprietary designs: SwingFit headgear and a RollFit cushion. The soft, silicone RollFit cushion sits lower on the bridge of your nose than some other nasal masks, making it easier to see over the top of. And the SwingFit headgear has a pivoting clip connection that makes it easier to put on and take off.

The Nova Nasal Fit Pack is an excellent option for new CPAP users and people who aren’t sure which size cushion to buy, as it comes with all three options. The Fit Pack also has all the components you need to switch your existing mask out with the Nova Nasal.

Care

Daily

  1. Wash your cushion and frame assembly in lukewarm water and gentle soap. Don’t leave them in the water for more than 10 minutes.  
  2. Use fresh water to rinse the cushion and assembly and get rid of excess soap.
  3. Air-dry them away from direct sunlight on a clean towel.

Weekly

  • Use the same process to clean your headgear, tube clip, and diffuser on a weekly basis. 
  • You should also clean your CPAP hose and humidifier chamber weekly to prevent germs and bacteria build-up. 

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends against using ozone or ultraviolet (UV) cleaners. Fisher & Paykel recommends replacing your mask after 6 and 12 months of regular use, though Medicare and most insurance companies will cover replacements more frequently.

How It Works

This is a nasal mask that covers your entire nose. The top of the cushion rests on the bridge of your nose, while the bottom sits between your nostrils and lips. It connects to a hose that attaches to your CPAP machine, delivering pressurized air to your breathing passages via the mask’s cushion. The pressurized air provides support to prevent your upper airway from collapsing.

The mask cushion and frame connect to headgear that wraps around the back of your head to keep the mask attached and prevent it from shifting while you sleep. When you attach the tubing, you can wear it in front of your face or clipped to the headgear at the top of your head.

How to Use It

  1. Try each cushion by holding it up to your nose. The top should fit low on the bridge of your nose with the bottom between your nostrils and upper lip. Pick the option that covers your nose with no gaps.
  2. Connect the top strap to a headgear hole.
  3. Unhook the headgear clip from the mask’s frame at the front of the frame.
  4. Place your cushion over your nose, then swing the headgear around the back of your head.
  5. Clip the headgear into the frame; you should hear a click. 
  6. Adjust the upper headgear straps, then adjust the lower headgear straps.
  7. Connect the swivel to your CPAP hose, then turn on your machine. 
  8. Adjust the fit if necessary once the machine is on.

Does the Nova Nasal Mask contain magnets?

No, Fisher & Paykel products, including the Nova Nasal Mask, do not contain magnets. The headgear uses a pivoting plastic clip to attach to the mask’s frame, not magnets. 

How do I choose the right size for the Nova Nasal Mask?

The Nova Nasal Mask Fit Pick includes three cushion sizes (small, medium, and large), which is helpful if you’re not sure which one to get. A properly fitting mask should completely cover your nose. The top of the cushion sits low on the bridge of your nose, and the bottom of the cushion lays between your nostrils and mouth. 

There shouldn’t be any gaps between the silicone and your skin; it should be a secure but not tight fit. If the cushion doesn’t completely cover your nose, try the next size up. If there are gaps between the cushion and your skin, try a smaller size. 

The headgear is available in small and medium-large options. The fit pack comes with the medium-large option.

Is the Nova Nasal Mask compatible with all CPAP machines?

The Nova Nasal Mask is compatible with all CPAP machines that use 22-millimeter connections, which includes all standard machines. You should be able to use it without needing a hose adaptor, no matter which CPAP, APAP, or BiPAP machine you own. 

Can I buy replacement parts for the Nova Nasal Mask separately?

All components of the Nova Nasal Mask are available to purchase separately. When it’s time to replace your cushion, headgear, or frame system, you can buy each part individually.

What should I do if I experience leaks with the Nova Nasal Mask?

Leaks often mean that a mask doesn’t fit correctly. Sometimes, people overtighten their masks to compensate for leaks, but this can actually cause leaks to become worse. Loosen your headgear to see if that makes a difference. If not, try a smaller or larger mask cushion. You shouldn’t feel any air between your skin and the mask.

Sleeping position can also impact mask leaks. If you sleep on your stomach, you may need to try sleeping on your side or back or using a CPAP pillow that doesn’t interfere with the mask’s placement.
