The Nova Nasal Mask from Fisher & Paykel is designed with comfort and ease of use in mind. It’s a nasal mask that’s available in three cushion and two headgear size options. The mask boasts two of Fisher & Paykel’s proprietary designs: SwingFit and RollFit. The SwingFit headgear clips on and off easily, and the RollFit cushion rests softly on your nose below your field of vision. 

The mask frame has a diffuser that’s engineered to reduce sound and prevent leaks. The mask is compatible with all standard CPAP machines without an adapter. And the short tubing swivels easily and can be worn either at the top of the head or in front of the face

Daily

  1. Wash your cushion and frame assembly daily by soaking them in soapy, lukewarm water. Use gentle soap and don’t soak the parts for more than 10 minutes.  
  2. Rinse the cushion and frame assembly with fresh water, making sure there’s no soap left.
  3. Lay them out to air-dry on a clean towel away from direct sunlight. 

Weekly

  • Clean the headgear, tube clip, and diffuser weekly by following the same steps as the daily cleaning instructions. 
  • You should also wash your CPAP hose and humidifier chamber on a weekly basis. 

Don’t use ozone or ultraviolet (UV) cleaners on your mask. Fisher & Paykel recommends replacing your mask after 6 to 12 months of use, however, many insurance companies, including Medicare, will replace nasal masks more often.

How It Works

As the name implies, the Nova Nasal CPAP Mask is a nasal mask that fits over your nose, with the top of the mask cushion resting on the bridge of your nose and the bottom of the mask beneath your nose. The cushion connects to a short length of tubing that swivels so that it can rest at the top of your head or in front of your face. That tubing attaches to your longer CPAP hose, then to the CPAP machine itself.

Fabric-covered headgear fastens around the back of your head and clips to the cushion. Your CPAP device creates pressurized air that travels from the machine, through the hose and tubing to your nasal mask. The pressurized air enters your breathing passages through your nose and supports your airway to prevent it from collapsing.

How to Use It

  1. Connect the top strap to a headgear hole.
  2. Unhook the headgear clip from the mask’s frame.
  3. Place the cushion over your nose, then swing the headgear around the back of your head.
  4. Clip the headgear into the frame; you should hear a click. 
  5. Adjust the upper headgear straps, then adjust the lower headgear straps.
  6. Connect the swivel to your CPAP hose, then turn on your machine. 
  7. Adjust the fit if necessary once the machine is on.

Does the Nova Nasal Mask contain magnets?

The Nova Nasal Mask doesn’t contain any magnets and has not been recalled. Instead of magnets, the headgear attaches to the mask frame using a plastic pivoting clip.

How do I choose the right size for the Nova Nasal Mask?

The Nova Nasal Mask is available in small, medium, and large, while the headgear comes in small and medium-large. To find your size, follow the Fitting Guide video on the Fisher & Paykel website. A correctly fitting cushion should cover your nostrils, with the top of the cushion resting on the bridge of your nose and the bottom part of the cushion sitting between your nose and mouth. 

If your nose doesn’t fit within the cushion, size up. If the cushion’s silicone doesn’t sit flush with your skin or it leaves gaps, size down. If you’re not sure which size to purchase initially, you can opt for the Fit Pack that includes three cushion sizes.

Is the Nova Nasal Mask compatible with all CPAP machines?

The Nova Nasal Mask is compatible with all standard CPAP, APAP, and BiPAP machines. The mask’s tubing connection is 22 millimeters, so it’s compatible with other standard CPAP hoses without requiring an adaptor.

Can I buy replacement parts for the Nova Nasal Mask separately?

If you only need to replace one part of your Nova Nasal Mask, you can buy the replacement part separately without having to purchase an entirely new mask. Cushions, headgear, frame systems, and masks without headgear are available to purchase on their own.

What should I do if I experience leaks with the Nova Nasal Mask?

It may sound counterintuitive, but if you experience leaks with the Nova Nasal Mask, make sure you’re not overtightening it, as masks that are too tight against the face can cause leaks. You may also want to check that you’re using the correct cushion size for your face shape and nose size. The cushion should fit completely around your nose with no gaps. 

If your mask fits correctly, but you’re still experiencing leaks, you may need to consider switching sleeping positions. Stomach and side sleepers generally have more trouble with masks shifting because of where their faces and pillows connect. A CPAP pillow can help.
