Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress: An Introduction

Providing a balance of cushioning and support, the all-foam Ziwi Zipp Classic conforms to the body and excels at alleviating pressure. Its unique alternating pillar design allows for cooler airflow and helps reduce the heat buildup often associated with all-foam mattresses.

Ziwi is a U.S.-based mattress brand that was developed by Tony Pearce, who is best known for co-inventing the grid technology used in Purple mattresses. Ziwi launched their first mattress in 2024, calling it the "Zipp" or “ZiPP” as a nod to its zipper-accessible support core design. This mattress was orifinally named the Zipp Essential, and is now called the Zipp Classic. Ziwi has since added additional models to their mattress lineup.

How We Review

We brought the Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress into our Seattle-based Test Lab to run it through a series of tests using our custom product research methodology. Our testing team members took turns evaluating Zipp Classic in the lab, and then a couple of us took the mattress home to test it out in our own bedrooms and see how it performs in a real-world sleep environment. These tests help us identify individual strengths, weaknesses, and suitability for people with different body weights and sleep position preferences.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress?

Due to its all-foam construction, the Ziwi Zipp Classic conforms closely to relieve pressure in the shoulders, lower back, and hips. The Classic's polyfoam layers also help the mattress absorb motion, which means the movements of a person on one side of the bed are not likely to travel across the surface and bother their sleep partner.

Side sleepers across different weight groups are a great match for the Ziwi Zipp Classic because the mattress pushes back against heavier areas of the body and promotes proper spinal alignment. Although it is constructed to reduce heat build-up, those who sleep hot may still prefer a hybrid mattress over the Zipp Classic.

Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Excels at relieving pressure
  • Performs well for most side sleepers
  • Absorbs motion, making it good for couples sharing a bed

Cons

  • Too soft for most stomach sleepers who weigh 130 pounds or more
  • Sleeps hotter than hybrid models

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

We determined the Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress rates medium firm, or six out of 10 on our firmness scale with 10 indicating the firmest mattress possible. A majority of mattresses on the market fall between medium (5) and medium firm (6).

When picking out a new mattress, you'll want to consider not only the firmness level, but also your body weight and the sleep position you use most often. People with heavier frames generally get the support they need from firmer mattresses, white lighter-weight sleepers will probably feel more comfortable on softer mattresses. Similarly, back and stomach sleepers tend to require firmer mattresses in order to feel supported from head to toe, whereas side sleepers need more cushioning to lie comfortably in bed.

Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress Ratings

Under 130 lbs. 130-230 lbs. Over 230 lbs.
Side Sleepers 8/10 8.5/10 7.5/10
Back Sleepers 8.5/10 7.5/10 6/10
Stomach Sleepers 7.5/10 6.5/10 6/10

Side Sleepers

Generally, side sleepers prefer mattresses that are soft enough to let the shoulders and hips sink in a bit, yet firm enough to prevent them from sagging into the bed. These types of mattresses promote spinal alignment while relieving pressure. In our testing, side sleepers of all body weights found the Ziwi Zipp Classic comfortable and sufficiently supportive for their heavier areas.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers also benefit from cushioning, but tend to require a firmer mattress than side sleepers in order to keep the lower back properly supported. Our team's back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds found comfort on the Ziwi Zipp Classic, but those weighing over 230 didn't receive enough lumbar support from the mattress.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers typically need a firmer mattress to maintain spinal alignment, and our tests of the Ziwi Zipp Classic reflected this trend. Only stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds gave the mattress favorable ratings. Those weighing 130 pounds or more didn’t get enough support from the Zipp Classic and felt they needed a firmer surface to reduce their nighttime aches and pains.

Our Performance Ratings

Pressure Relief

8.5/10

Thanks to its adaptive foam layers, the Ziwi Zipp Classic conforms evenly and provides excellent pressure relief. By cushioning a sleeper’s curves and heavier areas, this mattress helps prevent pressure points from building during the night. This can be especially helpful for people prone to chronic pain or discomfort.

Temperature Control

7/10

The Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress has slightly above-average temperature regulation for an all-foam bed, thanks to its unique pillar design. Body weight pressing down on the mattress causes the support core columns to move, creating openings that allow air to circulate. However, the foam layers still absorb some warmth and the mattress won't remain as cool as a hybrid or latex bed.

Motion Isolation

8.5/10

Because of its adaptive foam layers, the Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress tends to absorb motion and prevents ripples of movement from transferring across the bed's surface. Since the mattress isolates motion very well, it’s a good match for couples who share a bed and don't want to disturb one another when changing sleep positions or getting up in the middle of the night.

Perimeter Support

7.5/10

The Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress has a perimeter that is fairly supportive. However, like most all-foam models, the Zipp Classic's edges aren't as strong as those found in hybrid or innerspring models with steel coils. Heavier individuals who sit or lean on the perimeter of the bed regularly are likely to sink excessively.

Durability

6/10

After completing our tests, we estimate that the Ziwi Zipp Classic will perform for about 5 to 6 years before it needs to be replaced. Over time, the foam layers will wear out and develop impressions that can affect how smooth and comfortable the surface feels. While the Zipp Classic is on par with the average all-foam model in terms of projected lifespan, other mattress types like hybrids and latex models typically last longer.

Ease of Movement

7.5/10

Rolling over or moving across the surface of the Ziwi Zipp Classic should be fairly easy for most people. However, the mattress is an all-foam model that conforms to the body, so some people may feel resistance when they move on the bed's surface compared to when they're on a hybrid or innerspring mattress.

Sex

6.5/10

The Ziwi Zipp Classic Mattress performs about average for sex. While most couples won't encounter any issues, the mattress does not contain coils and isn't very bouncy or responsive to movement. The perimeter may sink too much during sexual activity that involves sitting on or lying along the bed’s edges. However, the foam layers muffle noise to keep the mattress silent during sex.

Odor Emissions

7/10

Like many mattresses that contain foam layers, the Ziwi Zipp Classic produces an odor when you first unbox and expand it. The smell comes from volatile organic compounds (VOCs) the new mattress emits. This odor should dissipate within a few days, if not hours. Those who are particularly sensitive to smells can allow the bed to fully release its off-gassing odors in a separate room before sleeping on it.
