WinkBed Mattress: Our Verdict

Life is often a literal pain. Day-to-day stress, not to mention being on your feet or sitting at a desk for hours can intensify back, hip, and shoulder pain that worsens at night.

Enter the WinkBed. Calling it the chiropractor of mattresses might be a stretch, but in doing our research we kept noticing and hearing about its ability to soothe chronic pain and joint discomfort. Many noted tension-relieving firmness that still felt plush.

This review will mainly focus on WinkBed’s most popular style, the Luxury Firm, which the company touts as “the perfect balance of contouring comfort and pushback support” for side, side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers. While WinkBed presents the Luxury Firm as its most versatile model, it does come in three more: Soft, Firm (firmer than the Luxury Firm), and Plus (for larger bodies).

Encouraged by the reviews, we found in our tests that WinkBed mostly lived up to the hype. The Luxury Firm’s unique hybrid design of innersprings individually wrapped in fabric placed under a gel-infused quilted pillowtop and wrapped in Tencel (a soft, strong, and breathable fabric that comes from eucalyptus) struck just the right chord, offering both pressure relief and cushioning while keeping moisture at bay. Not to mention, the unboxing and setup process was a relative breeze.

About the WinkBed Mattress: An Intro

WinkBed launched in 2014 with the goal of using a direct-to-consumer model to sell high-quality, hotel-level luxury mattresses at lower prices. The company also prides itself in sourcing all materials and manufacturing in the U.S.

WinkBeds arrive boxed and ready to be slid onto a frame or platform (the company also recommends purchasing one of WinkBed’s frames for an ideal fit, but it’s not required).

WinkBeds are popping up at more and more top hotels around the country and receiving glowing accolades, including our pick as 2024’s Most Comfortable Mattress. Many WinkBed owners are return customers, having been so pleased with their first WinkBed purchase, they bought additional beds for other bedrooms.

But since everyone has their own idea of comfort, a unanimous crowd pleaser this is not.  Some claimed the Luxury Firm wasn’t quite firm enough, with others saying that as time went on, its firmness started sinking in certain areas. WinkBed offers a 120-night free trial, but if any problems arise beyond that window, the company offers a lifetime warranty for defective workmanship or materials and a 50% lifetime replacement for firmness-related issues.

Sleeping on a sinking mattress is a recipe for long-term low back pain, but it can also contribute to difficulty breathing, difficulty losing weight, digestive issues, and even some sleep disorders. Basically, if your mattress is starting to resemble a taco, you better get a new bed.

Our Key Findings: What It’s Like to Sleep on the WinkBed Luxury Firm

WinkBed was loudly trumpeted by back sleepers, particularly those with chronic conditions like hernia, sciatica, and spinal stenosis. They reported significantly less pain and improved sleep, including one person on our testing team who had just undergone back surgery.

Side sleepers like me were won over, too, finding WinkBed gentle yet supportive enough to conform to the spine while helping alleviate shoulder and hip tension. I also appreciate a nice set of firm edges that don’t collapse when you roll on them, and WinkBed held its own there.

Stomach sleepers were less enthusiastic, with reviewers finding the Luxury Firm lacking satisfactory midsection strength.

The top Tencel layer did its job, allowing for enough airflow for the ideal amount of coolness.

Notably, the WinkBed was also a hit among couples, supporting different body types and sleeping styles with minimal motion transfer in the middle of the night, which is likely due to its gel foam layer.

Several customers new to online mattress shopping were skeptical of buying without trying, but with few exceptions, most were impressed with a smooth ordering and delivery process.  Customer service also received kudos for being fast and responsive to follow-up on issues like size or firmness exchanges.

Pros

  • Individually wrapped coils with a gel-infused top layer is great for back sleepers
  • Good option for side sleepers who like strong, supportive edges
  • Tencel top layer delivers on breathability

Cons

  • Stomach sleepers did not find the Luxury Firm adequately supportive
  • Less conforming than all-memory foam beds
  • Might not be firm enough for those who prefer serious firmness

WinkBed Mattress Sleeper Ratings

For the most part, customer ratings matched our testing team’s reviews, with average-weight back sleepers giving the WinkBed a near perfect score. Stomach sleepers, however, weren’t totally sold on the Luxury Firm, preferring the firmer options.

What Other Reviewers Say

As a result of WinkBed’s rising awareness and popularity, it’s been widely reviewed by other mattress experts.

CNET said WinkBed offers a lot of bang for your buck, noting a mattress this comfortable with so many styles and firmness options usually cost way more than WinkBed’s $849-$1749 price range. We agree that although it feels splurge-worthy, WinkBed’s prices are actually more reasonable than many super high-end options out there

WinkBeds’ Luxury Firm has been Wirecutter’s top innerspring mattress choice for five years in a row, so safe to say, they’re fans. In fact, they believed its combination of foam layers and micro-coils made for the “fluffiest feeling” medium-firm bed they’ve tested. Their only caveat was the two-week delivery, which may inconvenience those in need of a mattress ASAP.

U.S. News & World Report and Tom’s Guide echoed what a resounding amount of back sleepers told us, which is how significantly it relieves back pain and promotes better sleep. Like me, U.S. News & World Report also appreciated its firm perimeter that prevents you from rolling off in the middle of the night. Mattress Clarity named the Luxury Firm their top orthopedic mattress pick.

What Real Customers Say

To get the scoop on what mattress shoppers (not product testers) had to say about WinkBed, we took an extensive look at its customer reviews. Most agree that the Luxury Firm hits the sweet spot between firm and just soft enough, but overall, they believed loving the WinkBed depends on zeroing in on the right model, which sometimes doesn’t happen on the first try.

A few customers who like their mattresses firm with a capital F, for example, found the Luxury Firm too soft for their liking, but after trading it for a WinkBed Firm, one declared: “OMG…YES.” As another put it, “If you like a really firm mattress, you’ll love the WinkBed Firm.”

And echoing our testing team’s thoughts, real-life customers with back problems found the WinkBed provided noticeable relief, expressing that “once it’s broken in, it’s perfect.”

It’s worth noting that many who felt the WinkBed wasn’t the right fit also commended its customer service, who were responsive, pleasant, and didn’t push back on return requests.

Our Performance Ratings

Motion Isolation

0/10

While it’s not 100% memory-foam, it prevented enough motion transfer to keep couples from feeling each other toss and turn at night.

Perimeter Support

0/10

All WinkBed models use high-quality steel springs to form the support core. The springs are engineered with an extraEDGE support system designed to prevent the mattress edges from sagging. The spring system combined with firmer foams or denser latex creates excellent edge support. The Softer model’s added cushioning in the comfort layer somewhat reduces the effectiveness of the extraEdge system, but the increased contouring may make it a worthwhile trade-off for those seeking a plusher feel.

Durability

0/10

Although there is that lifetime warranty for defects and the 50% warranty for firmness problems, many found that after the wear-in period, their WinkBed held up well over time.

Pressure Relief

0/10

Testers underscored the Luxury Firm as a pain reliever, the innersprings offering solid spine and shoulder support and the gel pillow top adding a necessary layer of softness.

Odor Emissions

0/10

Hybrid mattresses incorporate fewer synthetic materials and generally have less off-gassing than their all-foam counterparts. The WinkBed exceeds expectations even among hybrid mattress models due to the careful sourcing of its components. The foams used in the Softer, Luxury Firm, and Firmer models are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they are low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that cause the odors associated with off-gassing. The 100% pure latex comfort layer in the Plus mattress emits similarly low levels of VOCs.

Ease of Movement

0/10

While memory-foam lends itself to more of a body-wrapped sensation, WinkBed’s hybrid construction offers a level of freedom that allows for easier rolling.

Temperature Control

0/10

Tencel is a moisture-absorber and WinkBed’s Tencel layer really does help maintain a cool and dry sleep throughout the night.

Where Can You Buy a WinkBed?

WinkBed Shipping

WinkBed has free ground shipping in the U.S. with an average delivery time of two weeks. Doorstep delivery does not include any additional carrying or set-up. And once it’s out of the box and unrolled, there’s no waiting period before you can use it. You can sleep on it on night one.

WinkBed Mattress 120-Day Trial

WinkBed’s 120-day trial begins upon delivery. If you’re not satisfied, they offer a 100% refund that will arrive in your bank account within five days, but only if you give your new mattress at least 30 days to break in before starting a return or exchange. An exchange requires a $49 fee towards the delivery of a new bed. After the old mattress is picked up, a 60-day retrial begins.

There’s no trial period for platforms, mattress covers, and sheet sets, which are not available for return.
