What’s It Like to Sleep on the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress?

The medium firm (6) feel of the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress gives it a fairly broad appeal, but it works especially well for side sleepers under 230 pounds. Back and stomach sleepers under 130 pounds can also find a lot to like in the Mint. However, sleepers over 130 pounds may benefit from a firmer sleep surface that’s able to better align the spine and support the body’s heavier areas, like the hips.

In terms of performance, the Mint Mattress is made of polyfoam, not memory foam, so it has less of that signature hug. It’s not bouncy or springy like a latex or hybrid mattress, but it does sleep cooler than other all-foam options and is great at isolating motion. It’s also durable and should hold up well to normal wear and tear.

The ideal firmness level for a mattress varies depending on a sleeper’s body type and preferred sleep position. Our team of testers includes a range of sleepers to better pinpoint a mattress’ balance of comfort and support, as well as its overall feel.

In the case of the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress, its fairly balanced ratio between the comfort layers and support core give it a medium firm rating or a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale. This mid-level firmness level is neither too soft nor too hard and works for a majority of sleepers.

The Mint was an excellent fit for our side sleeping testers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds. They appreciated the just-right levels of conforming comfort and alignment-promoting support. Lighter side sleepers also benefited from the pressure-relieving contour of the Mint’s polyfoam upper layers. While slightly less impressed, side sleepers over 230 pounds rated the Mint as average for an all-foam mattress.

Back Sleepers

For our back sleepers under 130 pounds, the Mint checked all the boxes. They noted the support core’s ample pushback and the significant pressure relief of the comfort layers. However, for our back-sleeping testers over 130 pounds, the Mint delivered only average levels of comfort and support.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers under 130 pounds found the most to like about the Mint, finding that the polyfoam core offered sufficient support around the hips, while the comfort layers cradled the body. Ratings decreased for stomach sleepers over 130 pounds with the waning performance more pronounced for those above 230 pounds who experienced too much sinkage under the midsection.

What Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Made Of?

The Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress features a knit cover that zips off for easy washing. Two layers of adaptive polyfoam make up the comfort system. The first is 3 inches of open-cell polyfoam designed to wick away heat with its infusion of graphite and gel. Just below that is a second 2-inch polyfoam layer that incorporates gel and ceramic intended to provide additional cooling and pressure relief.

A 6.5-inch layer of polyfoam in the support core provides a sturdy foundation. The Mint’s edges are reinforced, allowing them to withstand the pressure of getting in and out of bed. All foams used in the Mint Mattress are CertiPUR-US certified free of harmful chemicals and Greenguard Gold certified low in emissions.
