SweetNight CoolNest Ultra Mattress: An Introduction

Launched in 2011, SweetNight focuses on affordably priced sleep products. The SweetNight CoolNest Ultra is one of the brand’s most advanced models, aiming to deliver a cooler sleep experience at a reasonable cost. It is the premium model in the CoolNest line, which also includes the SweetNight CoolNest and the upgraded SweetNight CoolNest Pro

This all-foam model comes in 12-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch versions, which we rate as having medium firm (6), medium (5), and medium soft (4) feels, respectively.

How We Review

Leveraging our product testing methodology, we analyzed all three versions of the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra. For the most comprehensive and inclusive overview of its performance, we included testers with different body types and position preferences. In addition to collecting subjective feedback from these testers, we took objective measures of temperature regulation, surface vibrations, and pressure buildup to determine how the mattress performs for different sleepers.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra?

The SweetNight CoolNest Ultra comes in three firmness options: medium soft (4), medium (5), and medium firm (6). Performance varies slightly, but all three designs stand out for their pressure relief and motion isolation.

The SweetNight CoolNest Ultra’s generous comfort system deeply cradles the sleeper to reduce pressure buildup for those prone to discomfort around their hips and shoulders. The plush foams and close hug also substantially limit the spread of vibrations, which may help anyone who is easily awakened when their sleep partner moves in bed.

SweetNight CoolNest Ultra Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Best-in-class motion isolation
  • Superior pressure relief well-suited to side sleepers
  • Zoned support to promote better posture

Cons

  • May feel too plush to some stomach and back sleepers over 130 pounds
  • Limited edge support may make the bed feel smaller

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

Three firmness and profile options are available for the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra. The 12-inch has a medium firm (6) feel, the 14-inch is medium (5), and the 16-inch is medium soft (4). These ratings are based on our 10-point firmness scale, with 1 as the softest and 10 as the firmest.

To get the clearest picture of how the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra may perform for different sleepers, we include testers with a range of body types and position preferences.

Choosing a mattress can be difficult, but taking into account your weight and preferred sleep position can help point you in the right direction. While side sleepers and individuals under 130 pounds frequently prefer a softer surface, stomach sleepers and those over 230 pounds more often favor firmer support. Back sleepers and individuals between 130 and 230 pounds generally fall more toward the middle of the range.

Side Sleepers

Since side sleepers Since side sleepers often benefit from a pressure-relieving mattress, SweetNight CoolNest Ultra’s ample comfort system and notable contouring were a good match for most of our team members who favor the position.

However, their firmness preferences varied considerably. Those under 130 pounds generally preferred the medium soft (4) option, while those weighing 130 pounds or more gave the medium firm (6) option the highest marks.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers usually appreciate a mattress that molds to the curve of their spine without letting their hips sag in and pull their spine out of alignment. Our testers noted that the robust comfort system cushioned and cradled their bodies, while the zoned support limited sinkage around their hips.

Across weight groups, our testers preferred the medium firm (6) version for its extra support. However, most team members up to 230 pounds also found the softer options moderately comfortable for back sleeping.

Stomach Sleepers

Stomach sleepers typically need the most support of any position to prevent their midsections from dragging their spines out of alignment. At the same time, they often enjoy some surface-level cushioning, like the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra’s comfort system provides.

Because support was their highest priority, our testers preferred the medium firm (6) version of the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra. Some testers, especially those over 130 pounds, felt like it was difficult to maintain good sleep posture on the softer options.

Our Performance Ratings

Pressure Relief

9.5/10

Pressure relief is one of the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra’s strongest selling points. Its polyfoam and memory foam comfort system hugs the body closely to distribute pressure evenly. This trait is often important for side sleepers and anyone else with sharp pressure-related discomfort. Since sleepers can sink in more deeply on the plusher versions of the mattress, they earned slightly higher ratings from our testing team. However, all three versions excel at pressure relief.

Temperature Control

6.5/10

Compared to similarly constructed foam models, the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra regulates temperature moderately well. It incorporates several layers of foam designed for breathability to let heat escape. The cover is also intended to feel cool to the touch, and the top foam layer incorporates phase change material engineered to redistribute heat. For hot sleepers, the medium firm (6) may be the best option because its minimal hug means the surface traps less heat.

Motion Isolation

10/10

While all-foam models typically excel in this category, the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra motion isolation is among the strongest we’ve seen. Its generous foam layers absorb nearly all vibrations big and small, and this should appeal to couples. Each design isolates enough motion to prevent you and your partner from awakening when the other person changes positions during the night. However, sleepers who are especially sensitive to their partner’s movements might want to look at the medium soft (4) option for its truly exceptional motion isolation.

Perimeter Support

6/10

All-foam models often have limited edge support, and the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra follows suit. Our team generally preferred lying closer toward the center of the bed and limiting how often they sat on the edge. This made the surface area feel smaller when they laid on the bed with a testing partner. Sleepers who frequently use the edge of the bed may prefer the medium firm (6) for its more moderate perimeter support. The medium (5) and medium soft (4) options compress more significantly under pressure.

Durability

6/10

On average, foam models generally last six or seven years, which the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra is likely to match. While foam naturally breaks down over time, the layered construction may help spread out that wear and tear. Following manufacturer care instructions and rotating the mattress regularly can also help you maximize its lifespan.

Ease of Movement

6.5/10

Our team members found that the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra was easy enough to move on, but it didn’t facilitate movement. The close contouring foams allow enough sinkage that some individuals may feel like it takes some effort to change positions, and that effect is heightened on the softer versions of the mattress. If ease of movement is a priority, the medium firm (6) may be the best option.

Sex

6.0/10

The SweetNight CoolNest Ultra is moderately suited to sex because the foam construction eliminates the risk of coil-related noises. While the surface lacks the responsiveness of hybrid and innerspring models, the medium firm (6) option is likely to allow sufficient movement for many couples. However, couples may sink in more deeply than they’d prefer on the softer models.

Odor Emissions

6/10

The SweetNight CoolNest Ultra produced some odor when we unpacked these mattresses in our lab. Most new mattresses containing foam may emit off-gassing odors at first. These are the result of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from manufacturing escaping the surface. Some sleepers find them unpleasant, but they are usually considered low risk in normal household levels. After leaving the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra in a well-ventilated room for a couple of days, most smells should dissipate.

What Is the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra Made Of?

While the construction of the SweetNight CoolNest Ultra may vary slightly between the three profile options, the midrange, 14-inch model consists of a four-layer comfort system over a polyfoam core.

The CoolNest Ultra is encased in a polyester cover designed to feel cool to the touch. Underneath, a layer of proprietary polyfoam infused with phase change material is engineered to help regulate temperatures. The next layer uses proprietary memory foam intended to allow more airflow than traditional memory foam.

Another layer of memory foam under that deepens the contouring, while a gel infusion and ventilation are built for extra heat dissipation. A transitional polyfoam layer with seven firmness zones adds targeted support and conforming to promote spinal alignment. Finally, a polyfoam core enhances the stability, and a slip-resistant fabric base helps the mattress stay put.
