Puffy Cloud Mattress Review

Launched in 2017, Los Angeles-based mattress and bedding company Puffy currently offers two hybrid mattresses in addition to its original all-foam model. The 12-inch Puffy Lux Hybrid combines memory foam and polyfoam layers atop 6 inches of pocketed coils and a high-density polyfoam base layer. The 14-inch Royal Hybrid adds to the Lux’s profile with an additional 2-inch polyfoam layer that’s aerated to promote airflow.

We’ll focus on the flagship Puffy Mattress, delving into the specifics of what this 10-inch all-foam model is made of, what it’s like to sleep on it, and how it performed in several performance categories during our in-house sleep lab tests.

The Puffy Mattress is an all-foam model with a deeply conforming memory foam comfort layer that creates a plush feel. The support core of high-density polyfoam provides just enough pushback to prevent excessive sinkage for the majority of sleepers, but those seeking a firm sleep surface should look elsewhere.

The Puffy’s focus is on the cradling effect of the company’s proprietary foams, resulting in a medium (5) firmness that reinforces the feeling of nestling into the top comfort layer.

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

The way a mattress feels is subjective, but there are general rules of thumb to keep in mind when shopping for the best mattress for your needs. One key consideration is the relationship between sleep position, body weight, and the firmness of your mattress. 

We measure mattress firmness on a 10-point scale, with 1 being the softest and 10 the firmest. Typically, side sleepers benefit from a softer mattress that offers more contouring, while back and stomach sleepers find better support from a firmer mattress. 

It’s helpful to think of these recommendations as a range that shifts depending on the sleeper’s weight. For instance, a back sleeper weighing less than 230 pounds may prefer a slightly softer mattress than a heavier individual, while a side sleeper weighing over 230 pounds may want a mattress with a firmer feel.

Side Sleepers

Our side sleepers under 130 pounds found the Puffy Mattress to be an excellent fit, with its medium feel offering a nice balance of comfort and support. Those weighing between 130 and 230 pounds were also impressed with the Puffy’s deep contouring underscored by the support core’s effective pushback. Side sleepers over 230 pounds, while less enthusiastic overall, still gave the Puffy solid marks.

Back Sleepers

During testing, back sleepers under 130 pounds enjoyed the plush feel of the Puffy Mattress’ comfort layers and also benefited from the support provided by the polyfoam core. Our back sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds gave the Puffy decent grades, but those above that range experienced too much sinkage around their torso and hips to maintain comfort and proper spinal alignment.

Stomach Sleepers

Overall, the Puffy Mattress was not a great fit for our stomach sleepers. Testers under 130 pounds benefitted the most from the closely conforming memory foam and found just enough support from the polyfoam core. For stomach sleepers over 130 pounds, the medium firmness level didn’t offer enough pushback to prevent sinkage.

The Puffy Mattress has a stain-resistant and hypoallergenic polyester cover. Its comfort system contains 2 inches of Puffy’s proprietary Cooling Cloud memory foam, which includes gel infusions designed for temperature regulation. It’s followed by 2 inches of Climate Comfort polyfoam engineered for pressure relief and breathability.

The support core features 6 inches of the company’s high-density Firm Core Support polyfoam. Puffy’s Grip Base bottom cover helps keep the mattress in place.

The Puffy’s mid-range price-point places it in neither the budget nor the luxury mattress category. Among all-foam mattresses, it’s also about average.

Which Puffy Mattress Is Right for You?

The all-foam Puffy Mattress is the brand’s flagship model. The company also has two hybrid offerings: the Puffy Lux Hybrid and the Puffy Royal Hybrid. These combine memory foam and polyfoam comfort layers with a core of individually wrapped coils. 

The hybrid mattresses both feature higher price tags and taller profiles, though all three models have comparable firmness levels and similar performance characteristics. While the all-foam mattress has superior motion isolation, shoppers looking for better temperature control, ease of movement, and conduciveness for sex may prefer the breathability and bounce of a hybrid model.
