During our testing, side sleepers found the mattress exceptionally comfortable, with the right balance of softness and structure.

Side Sleepers

Our side sleepers were impressed by the Emma Original’s balance of softness and support. The conforming memory foam layers allowed their hips and shoulders to sink into the bed’s surface, while the dense polyfoam support core maintained enough structure to keep their spines in alignment.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers weighing under 230 pounds noted that this mattress is just firm enough to prevent discomfort in the lower back. However, most of our back sleepers preferred the increased firmness found in the Emma CliMax Hybrid.

Stomach Sleepers

When testing the Emma Original, the stomach sleepers on our team felt about the same as our back sleepers. Stomach sleepers need a firm enough mattress to prevent their midsection from sinking too far and affecting alignment. While our stomach sleepers below 230 pounds found the Emma Original moderately comfortable, those over 230 pounds said they prefer a firmer mattress.

The Emma Original scored high in our tests for motion isolation. The two layers of memory foam coupled with a dense polyfoam support core absorb and dampen motion transfer. Although light sleepers may notice movements from co-sleepers or pets, the overall construction and materials of this mattress make it a strong option for those prioritizing effective motion isolation.

We found the Emma Original’s edge support to be average for an all-foam model. While the dense polyfoam support core provides some perimeter stability, the layers of memory foam in the comfort system tend to compress more under weight. This could make the edges feel less secure, especially when sitting or sleeping close to the sides.

While the durability of a mattress is highly dependent on individual use and care, we expect that the Emma Original should last the approximate six to seven years typical of a high-quality foam mattress. Much of this assessment is thanks to the bed’s polyfoam support core, which is dense enough to prevent excessive sagging over time.

The Emma Original struggles in the ease of movement category. Its construction, particularly the dual layers of memory foam, impeded movement during our tests, as it conformed to the body and was slow to regain its original shape. This could potentially cause sleepers to feel stifled, particularly those who change positions often during the night.

Typically, a less conforming and bouncier mattress makes for a more ideal surface for sex. For couples who value discreetness, the memory foam layers in the Emma Original are virtually silent. However, the mattress lacks significant bounce, which could hinder movement. Additionally, its temperature regulation is less than ideal.

The smell after unboxing a compressed mattress is referred to as off-gassing, which is caused by the release of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Emma uses foams that are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they’re made without ozone-depleting chemicals and have been tested for safe levels of VOCs. Some people may still notice a slight smell when unwrapping the Emma Original, but it should dissipate fairly quickly.
