Casper One Mattress: An Introduction

Founded in 2014, Casper was one of the first online mattress-in-a-box stores. Since its founding, the company has developed a line of mattresses based on its bestselling option, the Casper Original Mattress.

In 2024, Casper introduced a brand new product line. The Casper One is the only all-foam model in this lineup, effectively replacing the Casper Original as the brand’s marquee foam mattress.

We’ll discuss the One’s features and how it performed during our in-house tests in areas like temperature control, edge support, and durability. We’ll also explain which types of sleepers are most likely to find this mattress a good fit.

How We Review

Our team of testers evaluates every product we review by using a rigorous product testing methodology to bring you accurate and relevant information. Our testers focus on the product features that matter most when choosing the best mattress for you.

What’s It Like to Sleep on the Casper One Mattress?

The Casper One Mattress has a balanced, durable feel that works particularly well for most side sleepers.

The comfort system is made up of two foam layers designed to provide contouring and support while also helping you sleep cool. The top polyfoam layer, which includes thousands of small perforations, promotes airflow and draws warm air away from your body. Underneath, a layer of zoned memory foam allows your shoulders to sink into the mattress while also stabilizing your hips and midsection at the same time.

Meanwhile, the polyfoam support core keeps the bed stable and supportive, allowing for easy movement across the surface.

Casper One Mattress Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Zoned memory foam comfort layer relieves pressure points
  • AirScape polyfoam layer increases airflow for a cooler sleep
  • Polyfoam core offers stability and makes it easy to move on the mattress

Cons

  • Lacks the bouncier feel of Casper’s hybrid models
  • Stomach and back sleepers over 230 pounds may sink too deeply, causing spinal misalignment
  • Weaker edge support may lead to sagging over time

Sleeping Positions, Body Weight, and Firmness

Our testing team rated the Casper One a 6 on our 10-point firmness scale. This represents a medium firm rating.

Your comfort on a mattress is determined by a variety of factors, such as sleep position and body weight. The Casper One performed best for side sleepers during our sleep lab tests, specifically those between 130 and 230 pounds. Our tests indicated that back and stomach sleepers over 230 pounds may want to consider a firmer mattress with more midsection support.

Side Sleepers

Side sleepers need support near their hips and shoulders for proper spinal alignment, and the Casper One’s zoned memory foam comfort layer does a good job of providing this. The Casper will likely work best for side sleepers under 230 pounds, while those over 230 pounds may need a firmer model like the Casper Element Pro.

Back Sleepers

Back sleepers need a mattress that provides good pressure relief without skimping on support. While back sleepers under 230 pounds will likely get the right amount of support and stability in the lumbar region with the Casper One, those over 230 pounds may need a firmer mattress.

Stomach Sleepers

It’s important for stomach sleepers to find a mattress that helps them avoid putting too much stress on the neck and spine. The Casper One provides good support for stomach sleepers under 130 pounds. However, those who weigh more may sink into the mattress too much, which can cause spinal misalignment and back pain.

Our Performance Ratings

Pressure Relief

4/10

The Casper One’s foam comfort system is designed to provide targeted pressure relief. The bed’s middle memory foam layer contains three strategically placed zones. The softer foam near your upper body is designed to help your shoulders feel supported, while firmer foams provide additional support to your lower body and help keep your spine properly aligned.

Temperature Control

3/10

The Casper’s top comfort layer is designed to help with temperature regulation by using the company’s proprietary open-cell polyfoam. Made with thousands of perforations, this foam helps air flow freely throughout the mattress, leading to a cooler sleep. Memory foam mattresses often retain heat, but designs like the Casper’s can help hot sleepers stay comfortable throughout the night.

Motion Isolation

4/10

Because of the foam in its support core and comfort layers, the Casper One Mattress does a great job of keeping motion from transferring across the mattress. This is one of the strengths of foam mattresses, which are generally good at absorbing movement. A mattress with solid motion isolation can be a good fit for couples or those who share a bed.

Perimeter Support

3/10

Good edge support can allow you to use more of a mattress’ surface, as well as making it easier to get into and out of bed. Some foam mattresses struggle when it comes to edge support, but the Casper’s polyfoam core helps it retain its shape even at the edges. You may feel some sinkage, but not as much as you might experience with softer foam beds.

Durability

3/10

On average, a foam mattress will last about five to eight years. However, longevity depends on factors like mattress use, body weight, and construction materials. With its medium (5) firmness and durable polyfoam layers, the Casper One is likely to last for about as long as a typical all-foam mattress. Firmer foam or latex mattresses will likely last longer.

Ease of Movement

3/10

Because they contour so closely to the body, foam mattresses can create a feeling of sleeping “in” the mattress, which may not appeal to more active sleepers who like to move around. However, even though the Casper One is a foam mattress, it still provides a good range of movement thanks to its zoned memory foam and polyfoam core.

Sex

3/10

Foam mattresses are usually not known for their responsiveness, but the Casper One provides a good balance of contouring and bounce, particularly when compared to other foam mattresses. This makes it a decent option for sex, especially since it also has good edge support, which allows more room for movement.

Odor Emissions

3/10

Most foam mattresses release volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, when unboxed. This process can produce a chemical-like smell that some people find unpleasant. The Casper One Mattress uses CertiPUR-US-certified foams with low VOC counts, which means you may notice a mild off-gassing smell, but it shouldn’t last long. Leaving the mattress in a well-ventilated area can help the smell dissipate more quickly.

What Is the Casper One Mattress Made Of?

The Casper One Mattress has three foam layers. The first comfort layer is made with open-cell polyfoam. This material is designed to assist with airflow, directing warm air away from the body while you sleep. The second zoned memory foam layer contains a mixture of softer and firmer foams. This design provides structured support around the midsection and hips while allowing for more contouring near the shoulders and feet.

The polyfoam support core gives the bed a stable and durable base. All of Casper’s foams are CertiPUR-US certified, indicating they have low VOC emissions.

How Much Does the Casper One Mattress Cost?

The Casper One has a mid-range price-point compared to similar foam beds, but is also the most affordable mattress in the Casper lineup. While there are less expensive foam mattresses on the market, they generally don’t include a zoned comfort layer or cooling system like the Casper One. This construction helps the Casper rate well in just about every performance category, which may make it worth the cost for some shoppers.

Which Casper Mattress Is Right for You?

Casper offers five mattress models that encompass two mattress types.

The Casper One is the company’s only all-foam bed. This choice is ideal for people who enjoy the soothing cradle of foam layers, as well as shoppers with limited budgets.

The Casper Dream Hybrid, Dream Max, Snow Hybrid, and Snow Max are hybrids. These mattresses feature cushy foam layers, but coil support cores result in stronger support and more bounce. The Snow Hybrid and Snow Max are built with cooling components to help hot sleepers stay cool.
