Frequently asked questions

How does the Home Sleep Study work?

The WatchPAT features a wrist sensor, pulse oximeter, and chest sensor. The device uses three points of contact – the wrist, finger, and neck – to collect data for seven key sleep apnea metrics.

The device measures central and obstructive sleep apnea events, true sleep time, snoring, breathing rates, oxygen saturation levels, heart rate, your body's position, and how much time you spend in each sleep stage.

Designed for comprehensive results, our sleep test helps your doctor make an informed diagnosis and therapy recommendations. The WatchPAT's sensors send data directly to a doctor via your cell phone's Bluetooth.

How much does a Home Sleep Study cost?

If you opt for an overnight study at a sleep lab, expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $3,000 for your stay.

At-home sleep tests are much more affordable by comparison. Our test costs $189 and includes a virtual consultation with a board-certified sleep specialist to make sure you are a candidate for a sleep study.

We also accept most major insurance providers, and you can pay as little as $0* out of pocket for your test when you go through insurance.

*Based on claims data, eligible insured patients may pay as little as $0 for the home sleep study and related consultations. Actual out-of-pocket costs vary by insurance plan, deductible, coinsurance, and coverage. We will provide your out-of-pocket cost prior to your first consultation. Cost does not include any post-diagnosis medication or treatment, if and when prescribed. Check your coverage at the link on this page.

Is the WatchPAT One Home Sleep Study approved for DOT?

Yes, the WatchPAT One is FDA-approved and accepted for use by the Department of Transportation (DOT). However, it is not approved for use by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Can people under age 18 do the Home Sleep Study?

No, the WatchPAT One Home Sleep Study cannot be used by children under 18 years of age. The device is designed and calibrated for adult use, and its accuracy may be affected by the smaller size of a child’s fingers.

If a sleep disorder is suspected in a child, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider who can recommend the appropriate diagnostic tools tailored to pediatric needs.

Does Sleep Doctor accept insurance for the Home Sleep Study?

Yes, we currently offer the Home Sleep Study with two payment options:

1) A cash pay rate of $189.00. Sleep Doctor accepts all credit cards, as well as HSA or FSA funds.
2) Coverage through insurance

To use insurance for the Home Sleep Study, check your coverage through the link on this page and fill out your new patient information form.

Insurance coverage may vary. Not all plans cover the Home Sleep Study, and pre-authorization may be required.

Home Sleep Studies are only available for U.S. residents 18 years of age and older.

Upon receiving your insurance information, Sleep Doctor will verify your coverage and provide you with the details and out of pocket cost via email within 3 business days.

Please note: If you’re planning to use insurance for CPAP or other sleep apnea treatment in the future, choose to pay with insurance now. Patients who start with a cash-pay sleep study and later use insurance for treatment often need to complete a new insurance-approved sleep study.

What happens after my insurance benefits are verified?

Once we've verified your insurance benefits and determined your estimated coverage, we'll email you a summary of your expected costs for each step of the process.

Your sleep study journey includes three separate services:

1. Pre-test consultation: After benefits verification, you'll receive an email with a link to schedule your pre-test consultation. Payment for this visit is due before your appointment. You’ll meet with a licensed provider to discuss your symptoms, sleep concerns, and determine whether a home sleep study is appropriate for you.

2. Home Sleep Study: If it’s determined that a Home Sleep Study is the best next step for you, we’ll ship your device to your home and you’ll complete your sleep test from the comfort of your own bed. Payment for the sleep study is due before the device is shipped.

3. Results review consultation: Once you’ve completed the test, your sleep study data will be sent securely to your provider and we’ll email you a link to schedule your results review consultation. You’ll meet with them to review your results, discuss your diagnosis (if any), and talk through recommended next steps. Payment for this visit is due before your appointment.

Your insurance may apply different copays, coinsurance, or deductibles to each part of your care:

  • Your pre-test consultation
  • Your home sleep study
  • Your results review consultation

To make the process easier, you'll typically make two payments. The exact amount you owe depends on your insurance plan and benefits.
What will my out of pocket cost be?

Out of pocket costs for Home Sleep Studies vary depending on your insurance plan. While some plans cover the full cost, you may still be responsible for a copay, deductible, or coinsurance. We will verify your insurance and provide you with your actual costs, then you can decide if it is more cost effective for you to use your insurance or to pay cash.

Terminology:

Copay: A copay is a fixed amount of money you pay for a health care service, like a doctor’s visit, every time you go. For example, you might pay $20 when you see the doctor, and your insurance covers the rest.

Deductible: A deductible is the amount of money you have to pay for health care services before your insurance starts to help pay. If your deductible is $500, you have to pay the first $500 of your medical bills, and then your insurance will start paying for the rest.

Coinsurance: Coinsurance is the percentage of the cost of a medical service that you have to pay after you’ve met your deductible. For example, if you have 20% coinsurance, you pay 20% of the cost, and your insurance pays the other 80%.

Why is my copay more expensive than paying cash for the Home Sleep Study?

Sleep Doctor doesn’t set the prices that insurance providers require. Occasionally, the cost set by your insurance provider may be higher than the price of purchasing the Home Sleep Study directly through us without using insurance. Additionally, insurance often requires separate billing for your pre-test consultation, the testing unit, and the post-test consultation. When you choose to pay cash, all of these costs are bundled.

    Home Sleep Study

The device was very easy to set up and put on, and did not cause any discomfort during my night of sleep. Results were returned quickly, and were fairly easy to understand after reading through the details about each of the data points.

I would have liked to use the device across multiple nights to get a clearer picture of variations in sleep patterns. The post-test consultation with a specialist was not very helpful. She ran through the results quickly and merely confirmed my understanding.

    It actually worked

After trying a home sleep study kit from my PCP that did not work and gave inconclusive results , I was skeptical of any home sleep study kits . However , a monitored sleep study can cost thousands of dollars so I decided to give Sleep Doctor a chance . The device was mailed to my home , it was easy to activate and gave detailed results that identified severe Sleep Apnea . Highly recommend this if you are in the same situation and want to diagnose and treat OSA without spending thousands of dollars and leaving your home .

    Best Study

This is my third at-home sleep study over the past six years, and I've used a different provider each time. By far, the Sleep Doctor at-home sleep study was the easiest and most user-friendly experience.

The instructions were clear, setup took only a few minutes, and the equipment was comfortable enough that it didn't interfere with my sleep like some previous tests. The entire process—from ordering to receiving the kit and returning it—was straightforward and well organized.

If you need an at-home sleep study and are deciding between providers, I would recommend Sleep Doctor based on the ease of use and overall experience.

    Perfect experience

So impressed with the quickness and ease of the whole process. From the time I placed the order to the time the sleep study was done and we were meeting with the Dr was exactly a week. Dr was so helpful and informative. Would definitely recommend a million times

    Positive Experience

After many signs pointed to apnea, I decided to take a home sleep test. (I knew I'd never fall asleep at some facility.) While the news was bad - severe apnea - the process to take the test, it's thoroughness, and the good session I had afterwards in which they reviewed the report, were all very well done and smooth. Bottom line is I'm now on CPAP, and Sleep Doctor also gave me the information to hook up with a very good provider. All in all, money well spent and a very positive experience with Sleep Doctor.
