Product Details

The At-Home Sleep Study from Sleep Doctor is a disposable sleep apnea test you can administer at home. Each device consists of finger, wrist, and chest sensors that connect to a smartphone app to monitor seven different metrics associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). If worn properly, the test can determine whether you qualify for an OSA diagnosis after just one night. WatchPAT One may be a more convenient alternative to an overnight sleep study, the traditional method for testing people for OSA symptoms.

To receive the test, you'll need to submit some assessment forms and schedule an online appointment with a licensed physician. This helps determine if you meet the diagnostic criteria for OSA. If the test confirms you have OSA symptoms, you'll meet with a sleep coach to discuss treatment and other follow-up steps. The test is disposable. You must be 18 years of age to take this test.

  • Chest, wrist, and finger sensors measure peripheral arterial tone, heart rate, blood oxygen, actigraphy, body position, snoring, and chest motion
  • Testers receive an AHI score in their follow-up email
  • Those who meet diagnostic criteria for OSA after testing may be prescribed PAP therapy
  • Unopened tests may be returned within 60 days

We recommend an at-home sleep study for:

  • People who frequently snore or wake up gasping for air
  • Those who suspect they have sleep apnea but wish to forgo traditional polysomnography

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the Home Sleep Study cause sleep problems?

Some people who take our Home Sleep Study experience anxiety during the night, which can make it hard to fall asleep and lead to inaccurate results. However, we're confident you'll be more comfortable and relaxed in your own bed than if you participated in an overnight sleep study at a sleep center.

For most people, the test can gather enough information after one night – even if you are nervous and experience sleep disruptions. To be considered a sufficient study, the data collected must include at least 6 hours of total recording time and a minimum of 4 hours of actual sleep time.

How does the Home Sleep Study study work?

The WatchPAT One Home Sleep Study features a wrist sensor, pulse oximeter, and chest sensor. The device uses three points of contact – the wrist, finger, and neck – to collect data for seven key sleep apnea metrics.

The device measures central and obstructive sleep apnea events, true sleep time, snoring, breathing rates, oxygen saturation levels, heart rate, your body's position, and how much time you spend in each sleep stage.

Designed for comprehensive results, our sleep test helps your doctor make an informed diagnosis and therapy recommendations. The WatchPAT's sensors send data directly to a doctor via your cell phone's Bluetooth.

How much does a Home Sleep Study cost?

If you opt for an overnight study at a sleep center, expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $3,000 for your stay.

At-home sleep tests are much more affordable by comparison. Our Home Sleep Study costs $189 and includes a virtual consultation with a board-certified sleep specialist to make sure you are a candidate for a sleep study.

How are people tested for sleep apnea?

Anyone seeking a sleep apnea diagnosis has two options: an overnight sleep study at a sleep lab or a Home Sleep Study.

Most center-based sleep studies are conducted over the course of one to two nights. Home Sleep Studies are faster and more convenient. Keep in mind that both types of tests require a doctor's prescription.

What is the purpose of a Home Sleep Study?

Sleep studies are used to monitor your sleep patterns and detect abnormalities in your breathing. Doctors use the study's results to diagnose or rule out obstructive sleep apnea.

Do you need a prescription for sleep apnea therapy?

CPAP machines and face masks are federally regulated medical devices in the United States, so you'll need a prescription for these components – both of which are essential for CPAP therapy. You can obtain a prescription by completing a Home Sleep Study, then receiving a sleep apnea diagnosis from a board-certified physician.

Is the Home Sleep Study approved for DOT?

Yes, the WatchPAT One Home Sleep Study is FDA-approved and accepted for use by the Department of Transportation (DOT). However, it is not approved for use by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Is the Home Sleep Study suitable for individuals under 18?

No, the WatchPAT One Home Sleep Study cannot be used by children under 18 years of age. The device is designed and calibrated for adult use, and its accuracy may be affected by the smaller size of a child’s fingers.

If a sleep disorder is suspected in a child, it’s important to consult with a healthcare provider who can recommend the appropriate diagnostic tools tailored to pediatric needs.

Do I need a smartphone to complete my Home Sleep Study?

Yes, a compatible smartphone is required. The WatchPATOne Home Sleep Study app guides you through setup, ensures proper sensor placement, and transmits your sleep data for analysis. Check compatibility: Apple App Store | Google Play

The sleep study was easy to do, which was very surprising.

The added value of beneficial medical information is well worth the price.

I actually slept during the test!

I have done an at home sleep study in the past and it was horrible! I didn’t sleep. I woke up with a headache and marks on my forehead that stayed for a couple of months. I also did a sleep study at the hospital. It was so uncomfortable and again- I didn’t sleep at all. With the sleep doctor test, I was able to sleep and get results. The doctor that shared my results explained everything clearly and she made recommendations. Overall, I had a great experience with this test.

    Overall Great Experience

The responses to questions and the customer support along the way was amazing. Device was easy to setup and understand. Only issue was pressure one the finger sensor being too high. I tried switching to pinky with same results. Otherwise glad to have chosen this company.

This sleep device was able to do more than I thought I was going to. I had a really nice talk with the respiratory therapist. I think the device was able to transfer some very important information. I learned a lot from the consultation. My only issue is that the device can only be used once.

After learning a person has a sleep apnea issue and gets a sleep device like a CPAP or a mandibular advancement device, you want to see if the device is making any difference. Instead of having to go pay another Sleep Doctor device, it would be nice to be able to reuse it and only be charged for the consultation.
