Queen mattresses are the most purchased mattress size for good reason. They’re wide enough to accommodate two sleepers and long enough to work for taller adults and teens. Queens also take up much less room than king size mattresses do, making them well-suited to smaller bedrooms or some studio apartments.

Along with type and performance, mattress size is one of the most important choices you’ll make while shopping for a new bed.

In our sleep lab, we’ve tested more than 1,000 queen size mattresses and have chosen our favorites as the best mattress of 2024. Our selections for the best queen mattress of 2024 includes hand-picked models that impressed our product testing team.

What Are the Dimensions of a Queen Size Bed?

Queen size beds measure 60 inches wide by 80 inches long and can range in height. Most models are between 10 and 18 inches thick, though you can find thicker and thinner options. Of the six standard mattress sizes, queens have the third greatest surface area. They are also the most popular mattress size, making it easy to find bedding, frames, and accessories that fit.

Full vs. Queen vs. King Sizes

When choosing between full vs. queen or queen vs. king, it’s important to consider factors like price and how much space you need both width-wise and length-wise. Queen mattresses are wider and longer than full size beds, and narrower than kings.

Because of their added width, many couples prefer queens over full size mattresses, though they are more expensive. They are also better for taller people because of their extra length. King size mattresses are significantly wider than queens, but require more floor space and a bigger budget. Queen mattresses bridge the gap between full and king size mattresses and work well for a wide range of couples and single sleepers.

Who Is a Queen Size Bed Best For?

A queen size mattress is best for people who prefer a bed big enough for two, but don’t want the extra space or costs that come with king beds. Couples, single people, taller individuals, and anyone seeking substantial space could benefit from using a queen size bed.

For single sleepers, a queen offers more space to move around than full and twin size beds do. A queen is also longer than full size and standard twin beds and it provides extra legroom for tall sleepers.

Many couples prefer queen beds over king and California king beds because they’re more affordable and their smaller size fits bedrooms with limited square footage. Queen size beds can also accommodate children or pets, though not as easily as the wider king sizes can.
