What poor sleep can look like for women

Women often experience symptoms differently than men, which can lead to delays in recognition or diagnosis. If any of these sound like you, we can help you get clarity:

  • Interrupted sleep from night sweats or sudden hot flashes
  • Morning migraines that don't go away after coffee
  • Night awakenings from a racing heart or anxious thoughts
  • Feeling "tired but wired" - exhausted but unable to shut your mind off
  • Trouble staying asleep, no matter what you try
  • Feeling chronically burnt out, depressed, or on edge

FAQ

What can a Home Sleep Study diagnose?

A Home Sleep Study is designed to detect obstructive sleep apnea—a sleep-related breathing disorder. It measures breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and airflow while you sleep to help identify whether disrupted breathing may be affecting your energy, focus, and long-term health.

How accurate is a Home Sleep Study?

For adults at risk of moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea, Home Sleep Studies are clinically validated and widely used by physicians. When reviewed by a licensed provider, the results provide reliable, actionable insights.

How is this different from an in-lab sleep study?

A Home Sleep Study is completed in your own bed, on your schedule. It’s more convenient, more comfortable, more affordable, and faster to access than a lab study. In-lab studies are sometimes recommended for more complex sleep conditions. Our care team will help you determine if that’s necessary.

Can lack of sleep actually cause my mood swings?

Yes. Chronic sleep deprivation disrupts the delicate balance of serotonin (your "happy" hormone) and cortisol (your "stress" hormone). This makes minor frustrations feel overwhelming and causes those "unpredictable" mood swings.

Why do my hormones make my sleep so much worse?

Think of your hormones as the "support system" for your airway. During pregnancy, extra fluid and physical pressure crowd your throat, making every breath harder. In menopause, you lose the estrogen and progesterone that normally keep your throat muscles firm; without them, those muscles sag and block your breathing at night. Whether it's PCOS weight shifts or monthly cycle drops, your changing biology literally softens your airway, turning "normal" sleep into a constant struggle to breathe.

Is a Home Sleep Study covered by insurance or HSA/FSA?

The Home Sleep Study is eligible for HSA or FSA reimbursement, and may be covered by insurance depending on your plan. We provide documentation to make reimbursement for eligible medical products or services purchased through Sleep Doctor straightforward.
